ideasLAB - exploring new possibilities | digital creativity in education | Scoop.it

ideasLAB aims to challenge the way we think about learning and teaching, and find new ways to take technology into the classroom.

Allan Shaw's insight:

ideasLAB's new white paper explores a new model for Collective Knowledge Construction and is well worth a read. It has some strong concepts that make much sense, and some that are theoretically sensible but perhaps challenging with adolescents and young adults.

Classroom design can boost primary pupils' progress by 16% | digital creativity in education | Scoop.it
Natural light, temperature and good air quality all help create a 'clever classroom'.
Allan Shaw's insight:

"Results of a three year research project have shown that the design of a classroom at primary school level can boost learning progress by up to 16% in a single year." Well worth a read! The results seem to make good sense but checking to see if classrooms are optimised is important.

10 Ways to Be More Mindful at Work

What is Mindfulness? And how can it be applied at work? When you exercise these ways to stay mindful throughout your workday, you will master important facets…
Allan Shaw's insight:

This Slideshare is a useful summary about Mindfulness, its advantages and how to begin to implement it into your attitudes and approaches. My experiences and efforts over 25 years suggest these approaches and attitudes work, albeit they are not always simple to implement and are likely to always remain a work in practice for me. 'Have a go' but you need to 'stick at it' to begin to feel change and improvement. Thank you to one of my colleagues, Chris Hilton, for sharing this with me.

The great education debate - Demos Quarterly

The great education debate - Demos Quarterly | digital creativity in education | Scoop.it

Demos Quarterly is an online magazine of political ideas, published by the British think-tank Demos. In this transcript...

'Education policy has experienced tumultuous change and often polarising debate over the past 30 years. But what are the facts: has our education system improved in that time? Is teaching too child-centred? Should we prioritising skills or knowledge?'

Allan Shaw's insight:

Set in the British context this transcript explores the the changes in school education over the last 30 years and their effect. 'Falling standards', greater access to more years at school for more young people, the balance amongst access, engagement, standards, teaching strategies, educational research, political direction and will and the purposes of schooling all rate discussion in this interesting transcript. This is worthy of reading and consideration in your own context.

Surface Pro 3: Why the Pen is Mightier than the Keyboard - YouTube

Travis Smith, National Education Specialist for Microsoft Australia presents a cogent overview of appropriate uses of digital technologies to improve learning.

Allan Shaw's insight:

This is quite a long clip but is well worth watching and considering as it contains good thinking and appropriate pedagogical approaches. There is some 'sell' at the end but very little. Travis has clearly put much thought and experience into drawing on the research and working out how best to apply it in classroom contexts. The classroom contexts seems to be aimed at upper primary and secondary age students but those with more expertise of younger students would be in a better position to comment.

The Power of Storytelling in eLearning by Jennifer Neibert

The Power of Storytelling in eLearning by Jennifer Neibert | digital creativity in education | Scoop.it

“What would happen if we took a deep breath, stepped away from the storyboard, and crafted a fascinating narrative to guide our learners? One that our learners felt and experienced on an emotional level; that elicited a response to go, or change, or do; and above all, that resulted in the meaningful change we’re really seeking—now that’s a powerful tale!”

Allan Shaw's insight:

"The easiest way to start building storytelling into your learning is to introduce characters and scenarios that require your learners to make decisions and see the consequences of their choices. By providing learners with a safe space to experience consequences, and giving them genuine, consequence-based feedback, they will be better equipped to make decisions in the real world." Sounds like good advice and thus I need to work at it as I am not a natural storyteller.

To get students engaged, teachers have to answer one very important question: "Why does this matter?" | digital creativity in education | Scoop.it

Via Gust MEES
Allan Shaw's insight:

Only learners do the learning! They must recognise the value of the work, because learning can be hard work at times. Unless there is a good answer to the question, 'Why does this matter?' then student engagement will struggle and thus learning will tend to struggle. Get ready teachers, because this question will become more common as a curriculum or classroom question and the answer needs to resonate with the learners.

The trust Jason Markey places in his community is of a very high level and the community members seem to have accepted and rewarded that trust with their attitudes and behaviours. This shows calculated risk taking and leadership exhibiting courage.

2. Informative feedback. Informative feedback is different from simple rewards because it is transformational rather than transactional.

3. Intrinsic motivation. When informative feedback works, students are intrinsically motivated to solve the problems, not to pass the test."

Allan Shaw's insight:

The three I's have value. Interactivity, Informative feedback and Intrinsic motivation. If these factors can be incorporated into a game then it is close to what a great teacher can do with a student.

Allan Shaw's insight:

These seven points are excellent. If you read the detail associated with each you'll see that they can be at odds with much of the cultural understanding of the purposes of schooling and modes of thinking we teach in schools.

1. You Are Creative

2. Creative Thinking is Work

3. You Must Go Through the Motions

4. Your Brain is Not a Computer

5. There is No Right Answer

6. There is No Such Thing as Failure

We are in interesting times. Time tested notions of ownership, often based in a physical object are needing to adjust to new media, technologies and the dissemination power of these digital media. This post comments upon the various ownerships of the end user and that of the publisher, the locus of control and the legal leverage afforded to the ‘owner’.  Educators should be interested in these discussions as the same applies to student work and the work of teachers. Where does ownership lay? Where should it lay if different to the status quo? Should and can it be a form a form of shared ownership? Can ‘creative commons’ assist?

The most successful transformations will occur with the use of technologies disruptive to current practice but where that technology allows for personal interaction amongst people. Teach Reflection: Have You Seen Yourself Teach Lately?
Allan Shaw's insight:

Watching yourself teach is now so simple with digital video! It is an illuminating and powerful experience. It is many years since I was in the classroom for substantial periods of time but the memories of seeing my self teach on video remains a strong and vivid memory so many years later. At that time I learned so much about my craft simply by watching my self and reflecting on how the student's were learning (or not learning), engaged and involved or not, time on task, and especially whether the lesson was coherent to the students,  linked to prior material and foreshadowed coming lessons.

If you pass it on to someone you wish to encourage, please assist them to understand that it is safest to use Twitter for a clear purpose and not to mix up various purposes.

I use Twitter for professional learning and sharing of same with adult colleagues. If you use Twitter with students make sure the Twitter account used with students is only used for this type of communication and that it is done with transparency and good communication with parents so all understand what is occurring and why.
