"1. Don't aspire to be a good manager. As Peter Drucker said years ago, stable times require excellence and good management. As we transition to a new age, our organizations need more; they need leadership. Don't manage the status quo. Lead the change. Think of yourself primarily as a leader rather than just a manager. Don't simply seek to make improvements in your organization. In the past tinkering could do the trick. These times require deep innovation and transformation."

 

 "2. Don't accept any assumptions about the status quo. If 'it's always been this way' it may be time for a review. For example, don't accept hierarchies: Think networks. Understand that talent can now be both inside and exterior to your enterprise. ... Always emphasize teamwork and knowledge sharing, rather than hierarchy."

 

"4. Don't have work-life balance -- at least in the sense of trying to escape from work so you can have a life. Work should be fun -- so make work enjoyable and satisfying for everyone ..."

The very act of making decisions depletes our ability to make them well. So how do we navigate a world of endless choice?

 

Decision fatigue helps explain why ordinarily sensible people get angry at colleagues and families, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket and can’t resist the dealer’s offer to rustproof their new car. No matter how rational and high-minded you try to be, you can’t make decision after decision without paying a biological price.

 

The more choices you make throughout the day, the harder each one becomes for your brain, and eventually it looks for shortcuts, usually in either of two very different ways. One shortcut is to become reckless: to act impulsively... The other shortcut is the ultimate energy saver: do nothing. Instead of agonizing over decisions, avoid any choice.

But what really stumped me ... is the dissonance between the reaction many people have about innovation in their organization, and their wondrous, blithe acceptance of innovation from other firms or individuals. It’s almost as if most of us have bifurcated minds – absolutely rejecting the possibility of innovation WITHIN our organizations while simultaneously DEMANDING innovation from other firms.

 

Every person who “yes buts” an idea in a conference room while texting on an iPhone or Android should take a long look in the mirror. We have met the enemy of innovation and he is us.
