Scrapping The Starving Artist Mythology - The Creative Mind

Scrapping The Starving Artist Mythology - The Creative Mind | Creativity and Learning Insights | Scoop.it

“I love breaking the myth of the starving artist. That is such a lie that people tell artists from the day they are born, and it’s so sad that so many artists psych themselves out with this myth.”

Musician Magdalen Hsu-Li

The starving artist idea affects people in many ways, even providing a reason why someone will not invest time or energy into pursuing their creative interests.

Directing our feelings and thinking to be more creative

Directing our feelings and thinking to be more creative | Creativity and Learning Insights | Scoop.it

Do you remember how much you felt and thought as a child? Probably a lot, especially if you were gifted and creative. As an adult, we may have learned to cover up or set aside much of our inner life, in order to get along with others and do our jobs.

But if we want to be more fully alive and creative, it can really help to understand and stay in charge of our thinking and feelings.

15 Reasons Why We Should Be Teaching Our Kids To Code

15 Reasons Why We Should Be Teaching Our Kids To Code | Creativity and Learning Insights | Scoop.it

Should we be teaching our to kids code? Hell yea! How do I know? I’m a teacher and I see much of the present curriculum just plain tedious, rote memorization. I also have witnessed the decline in creativity in the classroom, year after year it is whittled away. Not much left today, and even teachers who value it above all else, have had the wind blown out of their sails."

Good to have a peek inside what's going on, eh?  Ready to take the plunge?

davidgibson's curator insight, April 11, 7:54 PM

Without scanning the whole article, what do you think we can do to dive deeper into use patterns? That is, how can we go deeper than what is mentioned in this quote:

"They found that people take classes or stop for different reasons, and therefore referring globally to "dropouts" makes no sense in the online context. They identified four groups of participants: those who completed most assignments, those who audited, those who gradually disengaged and those who sporadically sampled. (Most students who sign up never actually show up, making their inclusion in the data problematic.) The point of all this is not simply to record who is doing what but to "provide educators, instructional designers and platform developers with insights for designing effective and potentially adaptive learning environments that best meet the needs of MOOC participants," the researchers wrote."

Marci Segal, MS's comment, April 13, 10:56 AM
