Ten Steps to Writing a Novella

Ten Steps to Writing a Novella | Creative Writing Inspiration | Scoop.it

When I sold my first book to Pocket in 2011, it sold in a three-book series. Shortly after that, they requested three e-novellas. I'd never written a novella before, but I jumped at the chance. Here's what I learned about telling an exciting story in 40,000 words or less using my first novella, The Mysterious Madam Morpho, as the example.

How To Write Letters: A Vintage Guide to the Lost Art of Epistolary Etiquette, 1876

How To Write Letters: A Vintage Guide to the Lost Art of Epistolary Etiquette, 1876 | Creative Writing Inspiration | Scoop.it

"A letter should be regarded not merely as a medium for the communication of intelligence, but also as a work of art."

As a lover of old letters, I have a special soft spot for the lost art of letter-writing — an art robbed of romance and even basic courtesy in the age of rapid-fire, efficiency-obsessed, typed-with-one-thumb-on-a-tiny-keyboard communication. So I was utterly delighted to discover a rare and remarkable little book titled How To Write Letters (UK; public library; public domain) — a “manual of correspondence, showing the correct structure, composition, punctuation, formalities, and uses of the various kinds of Letters, Notes and Cards,” written in 1876 by J. Willis Westlake, an English Literature professor at the State Normal School in Millersville, Pennsylvania.

Why Female Authors Tend To Get Girly, Cheesy Book Covers - DesignTAXI.com

Why Female Authors Tend To Get Girly, Cheesy Book Covers - DesignTAXI.com | Creative Writing Inspiration | Scoop.it
Mackenzie Furniss's curator insight, May 17, 1:50 PM

This eqplains most readers question as to why female writers get such cheesy, mushy-gushy covers for their books. For some people it goes unrealized. Especially when the authors books are romantic fiction. A person will see it and think that it's all about true-love and following your heart. But it's not, "don't judge a book by it's cover".

I think that this article has a good read into the exploits of publishing companies. They try to get you to think one thing about a book when really it could be about something totally unexpected. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it is. But what it makes me think is that publishers are trying to get male writers and lose the females. That idea makes me think that they are a little like masochists of the modern age.

Laura Brown's comment, May 18, 10:03 AM
I think publishers just don't understand that women are not all about romance, cosmetics and family. Look at the greeting cards and compare cards for Mother's Day and Father's Day, those are the stereotypical image of women and men as seen by the media/ publishers. Things like greeting cards and book covers are very slow in changing, they cling to old standards and stereotypical images for a long time.

Word Decoding and Phonics | Helping Struggling Readers | Reading Rockets

Word Decoding and Phonics | Helping Struggling Readers | Reading Rockets | Creative Writing Inspiration | Scoop.it

Decoding is the ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words. Understanding these relationships gives children the ability to recognize familiar words quickly and to figure out words they haven't seen before. Although children may sometimes figure out some of these relationships on their own, most children benefit from explicit instruction in this area. Phonics is one approach to reading instruction that teaches students the principles of letter-sound relationships, how to sound out words, and exceptions to the principles.
