Get with the program: engaging students in computing | TheGuardian.com | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

Next September, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will be replaced by a flexible curriculum in computing, designed with the help of universities and industry. But will teachers – particularly those working in primary schools – have the necessary skills and expertise to deliver the new subject? What role should industry play in the implementation of the new curriculum? And how can we ensure young people have the right skills for the jobs of the future?

These were some of the questions raised at a recent debate hosted by the Guardian, in association with Microsoft, ahead of the introduction of the new computing curriculum in schools.

In the opening part of the discussion, participants were asked to explain why having computing on the curriculum is important. "The old ICT curriculum was about digital use," said Ian Livingstone, cofounder of Games Workshop. "In terms of the games industry, it's like someone being able to play the video game Angry Birds, but having no idea how to make Angry Birds. So the old ICT [curriculum] was, effectively, teaching kids how to read, but not how to write."

Paul Curzon – professor of computer science at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London – agreed, adding: "It's like a toddler being able to jump and land. He can do it without knowing any physics. But actually understanding why when you jump, you land – that's learning the physics. And computing is the equivalent."

Promoting the use Social Media in my classes for developing 21st century skills | Starr Sackstein, MJE, NBCT

Promoting the use Social Media in my classes for developing 21st century skills | Starr Sackstein, MJE, NBCT | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

The world is changing every day and through the use of social media (Twitter, WordPress, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest, for example) we are able to communicate with more people globally than ever before.

These different networks often exist without knowledge of controls or oversight and students are left to their own ideas about appropriate usage which can be potentially damaging to their futures.

As a teacher, I feel that social media is an integral part of learning and communicating in the 21st century and beyond and therefore it is an educator’s duty to both model and teach how to use it appropriately and effectively to promote personal brands and learning.

The 10-step checklist for digitizing your school | Learn Egg

The 10-step checklist for digitizing your school | Learn Egg | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

In an age of digital disruption, where the model for delivering education will change in the face of new media of delivery, schools will have to normalize the use of digital within their walls.

Sadly, there will be no one-size model for every school to adopt wholesale – schools will be on a spectrum of digitization – from fairly basic adoption to a full-scale blended model.

To succeed, digital must be a part of the way a school does things, and there’s a number of things to consider:

Lessons from Pioneers in Justice: Social Media Integration is Key to Maximizing Nonprofits’ Reach | ZeroDivide.org

Lessons from Pioneers in Justice: Social Media Integration is Key to Maximizing Nonprofits’ Reach | ZeroDivide.org | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

Social justice organizations have proven their ability to advocate, educate and organize like no other. Through social media, their power has been magnified exponentially. That said, bridging the connections from the community on the ground to the community in the cloud is not without its challenges—there are a multitude of roadblocks to be faced.

In 2010, ZeroDivide began working with the Levi Strauss Foundation to partner with five San Francisco-based social justice organizations on the five-year Pioneers in Justice initiative. The goal of our work together was to provide these organizations with technology and social media resources to build and scale their social media practices—supporting their growth and elevating their voices.

From early on, we identified that among the key challenges faced by the Pioneers was the need to find new, efficient ways to utilize expertise across their organizations to build robust social media presences within the constraints of both limited resources and human capital. Though ubiquitous among many nonprofits, these challenges are particularly difficult within civil rights organizations grappling with complex social issues that can be challenging to communicate.

Operating with these constraints, we identified two primary social media integration efforts that are not only helping the Pioneers to streamline communications, but also move from a sole communications staff member to “a staff that communicates” by promoting cross-organizational collaboration and ownership. These are: 1) Incorporating social media during the planning of external communications and marketing, and 2) Supporting internal staff adoption of social media.

In short, the Pioneers, true to their name, were able to navigate to successful organizational outcomes with limited resources. What follows are three best practices adopted and implemented by the pioneering organizations to support their social media integration efforts.

The Inquiry Process Explained Visually for Teachers | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

The Inquiry Process Explained Visually for Teachers | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

Learning is all about being curious and inquisitive. It is a process in which learners explore the unknown through their senses using both sensory and motor skills. Being involved and engaged in the learning task is the key to a successful learning journey and to elicit this kind of engagement from learners, teachers need to nurture a learning environment where students take responsibility for their learning and 'where they are only shown where to look but not told what to see'. Such environment definitely requires a solid approach and an informed strategy to learning one that is dubbed:  inquiry-based learning.

Inquiry-based learning is essential in developing the most solicited 21st century skills : problem solving and critical thinking. As a teacher, you might be wondering about ways to inculcate the precepts of strategy into your teaching and lesson planning. Here is for you a an excellent visual about the inquiry process created by educators from Australia and which I discovered through Mindshift.

Classroom Flipping: Jump Over The Hurdles | EdTechReview™

Classroom Flipping: Jump Over The Hurdles | EdTechReview™ | Creative Language Learning | Scoop.it

When technology boomed inside the territories of the global hemisphere, all aspects of human life were vastly affected. Especially, the educational sector brought in huge wonders. Students were shoved off the heavy burden of following the same boring conventional educational methods.

“Classroom flipping” was a hit, resulting in wide smiles on the murky faces of students and revival of new spirit of teaching in teachers.

To begin with, classroom flipping requires that you reach to every student effectively. Listen to their queries, do on-the-spot mentoring and get them to pursue the rest of the class activities with enthusiasm. This process is successful only when instructions are moved from group learning space to individual learning space. Now what the hurdle here could be:
