Backed By $3 Million In Funding, Canva Launches A Graphic Design Platform Anyone Can Use | TechCrunch | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it
A company called Canva is today launching what it hopes will become the default tool people use to create and collaborate on design online.

(...)

However, Canva isn’t meant to replace pro tools like Photoshop or InDesign, for example. “We draw a line in the sand, and we don’t do things like logo design or things that require a lot of fine-tuned pixel manipulation,” says Perkins. “But what designers can do is upload that content, and then do the layout design in Canva.”

Shoe Designs You Can Download For Free & 3D-Print At Home

Shoe Designs You Can Download For Free & 3D-Print At Home | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

While this clothing printer we featured earlier this year is just a concept for the future, Finnish designer has Janne Kyttanen has made a solid step towards 3D-printed fashion with his new collection of shoes.

Kyttanen has created four styles of wedges—namely the “Leaf”, “Macedonia”, “Facet” and “Classic”—of which, their design files can be downloaded for free by anyone, who can then produce it with a 3D-printer.

Made for Cubify, an online platform that turns your 3D-printing ideas into reality, users will ideally be able to 3D-print this line of wedges in their homes when these high-tech machines become common household appliance.

For now, even if you do not own a personal 3D-printing machine, you can still have your pair of wedges printed by Cubify—download the free design files here;

Ever had to scan something, but you didn’t have a scanner?

The folks at Creaceed have created a user-friendly app that helps you to overcome this quandary.

Called ‘Prizmo 2’, the app lets you use your smartphone, tablet, or digital camera to take a picture of what you need to scan—and after importing it—with its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, you can correct how it looks like on-screen.

Handy for ‘scanning’ books and magazines, its automatic page frame detection, automatic text orientation, and page curvature correction features change how your pictures look to accurately depict the pages and its texts.

Prizmo 2 is currently available at US$25.

Adorable, Original Flipbooks “Hand-Drawn” By Computer Code

The element of surprise is an inherent part of the creative process.

Los Angeles-based communication designer and media artist Matthias Dörfelt counts on that inconsistency. He collaborates with a computer, using code to produce work that only partially comes from his own imagination.

His latest output is in the form of flipbooks--those analog faves that require an old-school physical rifling through to enjoy--updated for the digital age. I Follow is an open-ended series of mini picture-books. Each tells the same sweet, simple story: a character jaunts through a somewhat rocky landscape, trailing a balloon that’s blowing away just out of reach. Once Dörfelt set those parameters, it was a matter of filtering his vision through PaperJS, a JavaScript framework for vector drawing (which he also used for his wildly engaging Weird Faces study).

SIGN PAINTERS (OFFICIAL TRAILER)

From vimeo.com -

COMING SOON!

This the official trailer for SIGN PAINTERS a documentary by Faythe Levine & Sam Macon. For information regarding screenings, and other news please visit signpaintermovie.com

About the project...

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

In 2010 Directors Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, with Cinematographer Travis Auclair, began documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary and book profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.

The book published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2012 features a foreword by legendary artist (and former sign painter) Ed Ruscha. We encourage you to pick up a copy at your local book shop, or directly from Princeton Architectural Press - goo.gl/aTZLq

New Web Service Delivers Quick Design Fixes for US$15

New Web Service Delivers Quick Design Fixes for US$15 | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

Crowd-sourcing design platform 99designs has recently announced a new service named “Swiftly”, which will link people with small design projects to designers who can complete them quickly and easily.

The most attractive aspect of Swiftly is how clients would only have to pay a flat rate of US$15 to get their simple design tasks—such as Photoshop tweaks, document alterations and cleaning up a business card design—done.

If the system works as planned, designers may be able to earn up to US$60 an hour for doing relatively easy work—however, designers’ income from the service will largely depend on the demand for it.

To safeguard the interests of both the designer and the client, Swiftly has a feedback loop where unrealistically large projects are flagged and customers get to approve work before they are considered completed.

Writer Mark Wilson of Fast Co. Design tried out the service by submitting three orders—one of which is to make it look as if Mark Zuckerberg has requested to be his friend on Facebook—and is generally pleased with both the quality of the work and the turnaround time.

What do you think—is this a system that is ripe for abuse or will it be a convenient way for designers to make a little money on the side?

You can try out Swiftly over here;

And to showcase the product—to clean up the branded coffee stain, Regina’s kitchen towels were used.
