Head Shots of Hand Models | HUH.

Head Shots of Hand Models | HUH. | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it
The world of hand modelling isn't a world we often think about, which is a good thing, because if we're thinking about the product they're advertising and not their hands then they've normally done a good job. None-the-less, hand modelling is big business. In fact, some of the world's top models even have their appendage's insured for seven figure sums just in case some DIY accident should occur. Unlike traditional models though, these people are afforded an anonymity that allows them to walk around in the knowledge that they won't be hassled by paparazzi, but a new book by Alex Holder unmasks these soft-handed people among us. In her day-to-day life, Holder works at ad agency Anomaly London, where she often has to spend a lot of time on set with hand and feet models. After spending lots of time on sets with hand and feet models I became fascinated with this strange industry, she says. How did they become hand models? Were they 'spotted'? How do they look after their hands? Nina is a hand supermodel and is Kate Moss’ hand double, she moisturises her hands about 30 times a day, Alex revealed. Frederic comes from a line of hand models, with both his father and his uncle doing the same job. One of the models had to be taken off the books for a year as they had a wart. Giulia stands in for little boys’ hands so if you see someone playing with a Power Ranger model on TV it’s probably her. Adnan is the only double jointed, Middle Eastern hand model on his agency’s books – who doesn’t want that accolade? The book, entitled Head Shots of Hand Models, was shot by Holder and photographer Oli Kellett with layout and design handled by the good people at M.G.T.

Patchwork | A secure collaboration app for vulnerable people

Patchwork | A secure collaboration app for vulnerable people | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it
Background

The tragic death of ‘Baby P’ in August 2007 caused shockwaves through local government and the care profession in the UK. The 17-month-old Peter Connelly had died after suffering a series of injuries inflicted by his parents over eight months, during which time was seen repeatedly by children’s services and health professionals.

(...)

Communication between these care agencies is surprisingly difficult, most agencies use case management systems which hold information too detailed and sensitive to share widely, creating gaps in knowledge. Each organisation has its own way of working and practitioners often find it difficult to refer their client to the right person to help.

Dominic Campbell, founder of design agency FutureGov, felt this was an area where social networking technology could make a difference.

(...)

How design helped

Working with practitioners, FutureGov built a prototype for a service called Patchwork. Patchwork is secure web tool that connects professionals, allowing practitioners from different organisations to quickly and simply access the contact details of others working with their clients.

Patchwork means frontline staff, such as district and county council contacts, fire service and social workers, can log on to a website, enter the name of a client, and immediately see which other agencies and professionals are supporting that person. They are also provided with details of the best way to communicate with those people, whether mobile, landline or email.

How To Design A Safer Operating Room

How To Design A Safer Operating Room | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

Getting an infection during surgery is a serious problem. Surgical site infections, which occur in the part of the body operated on, in the skin, tissue, organs, or an implant, can prolong hospital stays by more than a week, and increase the patient's risk of dying as much as 11-fold (one study estimated surgical infections cause 8,000 deaths a year). They also double the hospital's cost of treatment. To prevent dangerous infections, the global architecture firm NBBJ (along with American Shared Hospital Services) designed a new operating room concept that reduces the opportunity for germs to enter the surgical wound by combining a hands-free lighting system with clean air ventilation.

Mondriaan died 70 years ago, so is his work now copyright-free?

Mondriaan died 70 years ago, so is his work now copyright-free? | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

A dispute is looming about the use of works by Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan, who died 70 years ago, Trouw reports on Friday. Under European law, the copyright on Mondriaan’s work has now expired but the American-based Mondrian Trust says some works are still copyrighted and royalties need to be paid. The 70-year limit stems from the Berne convention, signed by 168 countries including the Netherlands, Trouw states. But the US uses a different ruling. It says everything produced prior to 1923 is copyright-free but that later work is subject to a 95-year rule dating from the time the work was first published in Europe. According to the Mondrian Trust, this means that Trouw is able to publish all Mondrian’s work in the newspaper but not online. This is because Americans could find the site and this would infringe the rights of Mondriaan’s heirs. After ‘intensive’ contact with Hilary Richardson of the trust, Trouw obtained a list of which paintings could and could not be used by a Dutch website.

Niels Biersteker's insight:

Is nu alles direct vrij te gebruiken? Nee. Naast auteursrechten

UseClark: The revolutionary app that seeks to change our (online) reading experience

UseClark: The revolutionary app that seeks to change our (online) reading experience | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

Did you know that we think at the speed of around 1400 words per minute (wpm) but can only read about 200 wpm? What makes up the difference of over a thousand words? Distractions! That not-so-good picture of you on your friend’s Facebook, the pile of unwashed clothes back home, evening plans with Ms. What’s-her-name, that article you were supposed to publish yesterday…dear God!

As a writer, I have three precious possessions: my mind, my fingers and my eyes. Of the three, the eyes have an expiry date; it’s constantly wearing out. Yet I can not do what I do without constantly reading and chomping data. So I’ve got to ration out my on-screen time and get the job done faster. I’ve dabbled with speed reading and found it to be an inelegant solution – it is not just about reading faster but retaining the information longer and being more productive. The market needed a better implementation and UseClark promises exactly that. Basically, speed reading is to UseClark what eating eggs is to having muscles like the Wolverine!
