Bunkr Is The PowerPoint Killer We’ve All Been Waiting For | TechCrunch | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

French startup Bunkr is focused on one simple task: killing PowerPoint. To achieve this goal, the company’s well-designed web app will help you collect visual content and organize it into slides. The result is a very visual HTML5 presentation that works on your computer, phone or tablet. You can export your work in PDF or PPT as well.

Powerful Anti-Texting Ad by Honda

Powerful Anti-Texting Ad by Honda | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

On the heels of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's sobering scenario announcing National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Honda and agency RPA bring us the latest campaign in the effort to curb texting and driving.

This spot (and accompanying print ad, below) pull the viewer into a text conversation happening on a mobile device, presumably on a road somewhere in America.

The dialogue is an authentic glimpse into the life of a young adult, replete with the usual shorthand and emojis common in casual banter. Without spoiling exactly what happens next, the ad succeeds in creating a unique message that is graphically smart, simple and powerful.

The Remarkable Power Of Visual Metaphors To Make Us More Creative

Figurative images, such as an illuminated or a blown bulb, can improve our insights--but they can also dim them.

(...)

Whatever the source of the effect, the practical implications for designers are quite intriguing. During a product development process, for instance, visual metaphors might prime people to give designers more creative feedback. And say you hold a focus group in a room vivified with bright light bulbs. Theoretically, participants would come up with more, and more constructive, ideas than participants who sit in an empty room.

Niels Biersteker's insight:

I wonder if there would be different outcomes by analyzing both realistic (photographic) and abstract (stylized) representations.

What It's Really Like To Name Products For A Living

What It's Really Like To Name Products For A Living | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it
Professional namer Nancy Friedman reveals what it's like naming everything from chairs to medical devices. Hint: not easy!

(...)

...But It’s Okay, Naming Is Relatively Cheap
"At the big firms, you’ll pay $50,000 to $100,00 per name. I don’t charge anywhere near that amount. When you consider how many just raw hours I put into a naming assignment, and the value of a good name, it’s a bargain. Companies spend a LOT of money on some things, then get tight-fisted on others. I think the name is kind of important!"

More details on IKEA's forthcoming PS 2014 Collection: It seems the Swedish furniture giant had hired a gaggle of designers "hand-picked from around the world" to complete the line, and while some are relative unknowns, at least four are not: Both Rich Brilliant Willing and matali crasset were commissioned to add their respective design spins to the youth-based collection. Brooklyn-based RBW's statement on their two objects, the Storage Table and LED Stool Lamp, are as terse as their designs

Dave Trott Chairman The Gate London www.thegatelondon.com

Because the book is a compilation rather than a single work, it may disappoint those looking for the predatory thinking concept to be explained and developed as it would be in a ‘proper’ business book. Instead, the idea emerges as an overarching theme that Dave examines from a number of angles. If you can accept that, you’ll get tons of enjoyment and hugely valuable insight from this brilliant book – and from seeing Dave speak at our 2013 conference.

The State of In-Car User Experience

No matter the price or the brand, the interfaces that adorn today’s vehicles are in a bad place. Thankfully, there’s hope.

There’s certainly some hope on the horizon with Apple and Google, though just how good these systems will be remains to be seen. One thing is clear, though: the current state of all in-car experiences is incredibly bad. For those manufacturers looking to go it alone, I don’t expect much.

F.lux Review: the software that makes you sleep better

F.lux Review: the software that makes you sleep better | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

The strapline for the software is “Better lighting…for your computer“. Whilst this gives you a very broad idea, many people miss the point completely. There’s a misconception that F.lux is like a software version of the ambient light sensors found on most Apple products and a lot of laptops these days. But there’s a subtle and important distinction. Instead of adjusting the brightness, F.lux works discreetly in the background, automatically adjusting the colour temperature of your screen. It adapts your computer’s display to the current time, “warm at night and like sunlight during the day.” In effect it tries to match the light from your computer to the light in your natural environment.

Read the opinion of experts before trying/using entry-level alternatives to Fontlab ($650) or Glyphs ($300) or RoboFont($400).

The existing open source FontForge is most mentioned, but possibly hard to handle, so there might be a market for new free open source font software, the challenge will be to make it user-friendly;

Ericsson lanceert ‘connected paper’

Ericsson lanceert ‘connected paper’ | Creative Feeds | Scoop.it

NIEUWS - 06 maart 2014 13:05 Jan Libbenga

The Foldscope project, which went live online today, totally turns the old-school scope on its head with a microscope that can be assembled in less than 10 minutes from paper and an inexpensive lens.
