I'm finding that the combination of "doing more with less," and the morale fall-out of the recession is increasingly adding to the psychological burden that many of us deal with at work. We've always had bad bosses, ill-tempered co-workers and...

I used to love watching the television show, Cheers. The writing was brilliant, the characters distinctive, and they always made me laugh out loud. My favorite part was whenever Norm walked into the bar and everyone looked up and shouted, "Norm!

Holodecks and String Quartets | Practice Makes Imperfect

Perfectionism or visionism?

So what’s the difference between the two? I encourage you to click on the link above and read Molly’s entire post, but in a nutshell, she says that they are “different frames for the experience or fear of falling short.”

Perfectionism has a feeling of tightness and anxiety about it. You rush or procrastinate or otherwise agonize over getting a task or project 100% right because your very identity is at stake here! (Okay, slight exaggeration there. Maybe.)

Visionism, on the other hand, creates a sense of frustration because you’re not able to translate the faultless pictures in your head into the physical world without some sort of compromise.

Plans, meet reality. Sorry, but it’s never going to be as perfect as you imagined it.

Learn to Tame the Piles on Your Desk | Red.Hot.Momentum | Creative Facilitation and Coaching | Scoop.it

It’s okay to have a big pile!

Really!

There’s this idea that if you have stacks of stuff or piles of stuff that you are somehow disorganized and scattered.

I disagree!

Stacks are their own form of organization or can be if you work them. Of course if you have unresolved stacks… that can be a problem. So let’s look at the almighty pile and see how we can use it more effectively.

What happens in a Grant Proposal Development consultation | Jo VanEvery

The impetus for designing my service this way was the recognition that I was seeing the same problems in many proposals. I’m a sociologist. I look for explanations in bigger structural issues. And I found them.

There are things that need to be in a grant proposal that are obvious to the researcher. Because they are obvious, it is really really difficult to articulate them. And it feels like a waste of time.

In the conversation we have, I ask questions to draw out the things that need to be articulated. I’m not an expert in your field. Why this question is important is not obvious to me. And I can ask a really good question.

Celebrating the Cracks and Crevices | Practice Makes Imperfect

Today’s blog post is brought to you by the term wabi-sabi.

No, it’s not something you would order at your neighborhood sushi bar. Nor is it a new character in a manga comic book. It’s a Japanese compound word which describes an entire philosophy and aesthetic in four simple syllables.
