Paper Generators: Harvesting Energy from Touching, Rubbing and Sliding

Paper Generators: Harvesting Energy from Touching, Rubbing and Sliding | Creative Communication News | Scoop.it

Via Jolanda van Drie
Marco den Engelsman's insight:

Disney Research, Pittsburgh presents  a new energy harvesting technology that generates electrical energy from a user’s interactions with paper-like materials. The energy harvesters are flexible, light, and inexpensive, and they utilize a user’s gestures such as tapping, touching, rubbing and sliding to generate energy. The harvested energy is then used to actuate LEDs, e-paper displays and other devices to create interactive applications for books and other printed media. http://www.disneyresearch.com/project/paper-generators/

Why newspapers stay in a world of digtal reading. The answere is marketing.

Key to any incremental print growth will be dawn of integrated marketing. Digital is often the headliner, but print — often as niche, sometimes as mass — retails a power as part of a larger marketing package.

Marco den Engelsman's insight:

The “Print Saves Trees” campaign explains how print is just one of the many reasons forest owners have for growing trees. And as we all know trees are pretty much the best option we have for cleaning up the excess CO2 in our atmosphere. We need any possible excuse for growing them so printing should really be at the top of the environmental messaging list.

3D print your own little piece of Norway with Terrafab | GizMag.com

3D print your own little piece of Norway with Terrafab | GizMag.com | Creative Communication News | Scoop.it

3D printing DIY enthusiasts are able to download a 3D mesh of their chosen topography, but for the rest of us a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) block of colored sandstone can be ordered for about US$100 courtesy of Shapeways.

Terrafab is that rarest of middlemen: a useful one, pulling in openly available geographical data and providing the code and number crunching to create the 3D mesh, before making that model available in a 3D printable file. And of course, with the 3D model freely downloadable, you could also shop around other 3D printing services if you can't af-fjord the $100.
