"It's hard to imagine a single career that doesn't have a need for someone who can code. Everything that "just works" has some type of code that makes it run. Coding (a.k.a. programming) is all around us. That's why all the cool kids are coding . . . or should be. Programming is not just the province of pale twenty-somethings in skinny jeans, hunched over three monitors, swigging Red Bull. Not any more! The newest pint-sized coders have just begun elementary school."

Haiku Deck on the Web Might Make You Forget About All Other Slideshow Tools ~ Free Technology for Teachers

Haiku Deck on the Web Might Make You Forget About All Other Slideshow Tools ~ Free Technology for Teachers | Creative Commons Kaleidoscope | Scoop.it

by Richard Byrne

"This week the popular iPad app, Haiku Deck, became available as a web app too. The new web version of Haiku Deck brings all of the awesome features of the iPad app to your web browser. With the web version of Haiku Deck you can create beautiful slideshows and share them on the web.

"Haiku Deck offers a variety of themes and templates to use in your presentations. The best aspects of Haiku Deck are the integrated image search and the automatically resizing text. On each of your slides you can add images of your own or search through Haiku Deck's library of images. As you type text on each slide, the text automatically shrinks to fit in the space allotted. The shrinking text feature is great for encouraging students to minimize the use of text in their slide designs."

Technology is the artful discourse about the use of tools. We are not teaching technology. We are teaching the artful use of the tools used and they come in many forms i.e. digital and discursive. Discursive technologies are the policies and curricula that guide the teaching and when they arrive in classrooms they are part of complex conversations teachers and students engage in.

This article is very important!  It details so many points that I've been stressing to teachers recently.  The 21st century skills are the skills that are essential for our students to be successful in a global society.  They are also the skills that many employers indicate are missing when young people the workforce.  These skills are essential.

Asking students to create or identify themselves through an avatar to explain how something works or how it is made allows students to package information in a way that it helps them to unpack knowledge. Becoming personally and emotionally invested helps to engage learners. They take ownership.
