Ethiopia arrests journalists accusing them of using social media to incite violence | Creative & Buzzworthy Social Media | Scoop.it
The Ethiopian government has arrested nine journalists in what a press freedom group called "one of the worst crackdowns against free expression in the country." (RT @pwonacott: Ethiopia arrests journalists accusing them of using social media to incite...
Angela Balzano's insight:

This article is from the Wall Street Journal and is about the Ethiopian government which has arrested nine journalists for their free expression.  They are accused of using social media to stir up violence in the country.

Article like this not only make us thankful that we live in America where this could never happen, but also shines a light on how big of an effect social media has not only in our country but around the globe.  We have all heard of content going viral, but we never consider that this viral content could effect government and a person's freedoms.  Viral content, especially negative content, is very hard to stop from spreading and can make a huge impact. For this reason, companies have to monitor social media in order to see trouble coming and quell outbursts that could snowball into a viral protest!

The Twitter effect: Why using social media too much can lead to divorce

The Twitter effect: Why using social media too much can lead to divorce | Creative & Buzzworthy Social Media | Scoop.it
It’s the sod's law of social media: for every new method of communication the internet introduces, a new way to start an argument is born as well.
Angela Balzano's insight:

Researchers have previously cited the damaging influence that Facebook can have on relationships and now they’ve turned to Twitter, concluding that “Twitter-related conflict” can lead to “negative relationship outcomes, including emotional and physical cheating, breakup and divorce”. The author spoke to 581 Twitter users of all ages, asking various questions about their level of activity on the social network and if any conflict arose with partners or former partners as a result of Twitter use.

This is article is fascinating, but also very obviously true. We have all dealt with the backlash of too much digital usage.  I have personally been on a date and was extremely annoyed when they guy wouldn't stop looking at his phone!  This is such a common issue, and this article focuses on how Twitter effects relationships. Just like anything you do in life, you must moderate.  Too much of anything is a bad thing, especially social media! I think the lesson here is to not get lost in all the digital noise.  It may be interesting and entertaining but you should remember that it is only digital and you should be living in the real world!

The biggest news in the world of social media over the last few weeks has been the IPO of LinkedIn, the upcoming Groupon IPO, and the slew of floatations these two are likely to herald. And, of course, underpinning all of this has been the simple question of whether the valuations these companies are receiving […]
Angela Balzano's insight:

Agencies and marketers need to get much better at using social platforms and technologies to build lasting relationships with consumers, without resorting to financial rewards, and start creating truly innovative strategies. 5 examples of excellent social media campaigns include e(1) Intel – Museum of Me (2) First Direct – Live (3) Heineken – Star Player (4) Metropolitan Police – Choose a Different Ending (5) Burberry – Art Of The Trench.

With consumers experiencing an overwhelming number of advertisements coming at them from every which way, it is even more imperative for marketers and advertisers to use creativity to engage views.  There are so many more platforms and possibilities to work with.  Companies that stay traditional will be left behind.  Consumers expect more out of brands now.  Relationships must be built and maintained every single day, and on multiple levels. Washington Post (blog)
Who has the best Web sites and social media outreach in Congress?
Angela Balzano's insight:

The Congressional Management Foundation recognized more than 80 lawmakers this week with Golden Mouse Awards for “excellence in online communication.” The awards, which have gone out every two years since 2002, come in two categories: Best Congressional Web Sites and Best Citizen Engagement on Social Media.  “These legislators not only improve their own standing with their constituents, they benefit the entire Congress,” said Bradford Fitch, president and chief executive of the good-government group.

This article is extremely interesting in that it applies social media to politics and government!  This article highlights just how powerful and influential social media truly is. Politicians know that in order to reach their audience on a personal level they need to have effective presences on the appropriate social media channels. Social media is a tool for crafting and shaping the persona of a person or business and a way to create a more personal relationship with an audience that is typically only reached through press releases and debates.

Why Social Media Is Like Dating (And How to be a Hot Date) | Social Media Today

Why Social Media Is Like Dating (And How to be a Hot Date) | Social Media Today | Creative & Buzzworthy Social Media | Scoop.it
I was briefly a dating coach, and have been noticing the similarities between good practices for dating and social media.
Angela Balzano's insight:

This article was written by a dating coach who noticed the similarities between good practices for dating and social media. The author gives tips to help your social media presence by becoming a better online "date." These tips include:

  1. First impressions
  2. Good listening
  3. Manners
  4. Keep it short and sweet
  5. Play the field
  6. Size matters less than you think
  7. Looks do matter

This is an entertaining article packed with useful knowledge about how to effectively present yourself (whether personally or a business.) Just like dating, social media can be full of pressure to say the right thing or look the right way.  I think it is actually pretty funny (and scary) that social media is pretty much taking over face-to-face contact.  Although this might be true in my opinion, social media is adapting to it's role as a main form of communication by becoming more personal and less robotic.  Who knows what the future holds for digital communications and face-to-face personal contact!
