Louis XVI and Marie Antionette spoiled?
Are the king and queen oblivious to the world around them? Where is all the money going? Marie Antionette and her outrageous apparel are all the rage lately. As the members of the third estate are giving, giving, giving, Marie is buying, buying, buying! Expensive jewelry and gowns are almost all Marie thinks about. And don't worry… We haven't forgotten about her ginormous head wear! The members of the third estate work very hard for days on end, only to give almost all their earnings up. Marie and Louis take advantage of this. Spending is apparently more important to the rulers than the good will of their country. Maybe they are not such great rulers after all.
To the Guillotine for Louis and Marie
Convicted of conspiracy with foreign powers, and sentenced to death? The guillotine is calling King Louis' name. But Louis will not be alone. He shall be accompanied by his queen, Marie Antoinette. In August, the royal couple had been arrested and imprisoned. Replacing the National Assembly, is the National Convention, who had recently abolished the monarchy. Discovered recently was evidence of King Louis' counterrevolutionary intrigues with Austria and other nations. This is very bad news for the king, who had been put on trial for treason. The ex-royal family was looking at a close death. Shortly after the trail, Louis XVI made a trip to the guillotine, and was executed. Following her husband, was Marie Antoinette, whom had also been tried for treason. Look for their names in the Obituaries.
The Reign of Terror
No more Sundays, no more Catholic church, no more safety and comfort in your own home. What is the cause of this? Robespierre. The Reign of Terror is spreading all over the country. No person is safe from the vicious guns, sabers, and worst of all, the guillotine. Innocent people are being accused of being enemies of the revolution. People are being killed by the thousands! Being buried alive! Being arrested without a trial! Deaths are being ordered daily by Robespierre- the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. Robespierre ordered the new constitution be suspended, and Sundays (and churches) be canceled and closed. Robespierre, once against the death penalty, has changed his mind entirely. He, greatly supported by the Sans- Culottes, decided that the guillotine was being over worked, and had to come up with new ways for the death penalty. Vertical deportation is his newest idea. Nailing accused people to planks, and then drowning them. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a citizen of the opposite gender. Also known as a "Republican Marriage". Robespierre's torture methods were used to kill almost 40,000 people in less than 15 months. A final speech has been given by Maximilien Robespierre. Giving a speech in his name has caused him much trouble. Attempting to shoot himself, Robespierre shatters his jaw. Not long after, his own creation turns on him. It is now his turn to "look through the republican window".
The guillotine is a very popular method of execution. The guillotine consists of two posts that are approximately 14 feet high, and a diagonal blade that weighs near 88 pounds. The guillotine is used to decapitate or behead a person who had done something wrong. The victim will place its head through the hole of the guillotine and wait for the executioner to let go of the rope that holds up the blade. The blade falls in less than a second and decapitates the victim in a very short amount of time. Some say the person is still conscious for some time after the head separates from the body. Usually the beheading process is not a private execution. Many townspeople gather around to watch.
Innocent people being executed
Many people have been denied a speedy trial, and headed straight to the guillotine, for a gander through the republican window. If a person seemed to be an enemy of the revolution, they were to be executed. They had no say, and no trail. If they were accused, they were executed. People gather around the guillotine to watch the constant executions take place. Innocent people walk slowly, with their head hanging, up to the guillotine. Other forms of executions are being used as well. People are being tied or nailed to planks and drowned, and some are being buried alive. Those accused citizens who struggle to stay alive face the piercing bite of the sabers, or rifles. Homes are being burnt to the ground, and whole families killed. When will the madness end?
The Storming of the Bastille
On the morning of July 14th a mob of angry third estate craftsmen and salesmen stormed the Bastille- a prison that symbolized the kings absolute power. Earlier, a rumor was spread that king Louis XVI was planning to send an army to attack the peasants. This outraged the third estate, causing them to rebel. The angry mob of third estate men ran to the Bastille and basically tore down the building. The men were in search for gun powder, because they knew the prison had a pile of it stocked inside. The mob stole 28,000 rifles earlier that day from the Invalides, so the powder was all they needed. There were not many prisoners in the Bastille when it was being torn down. Only about seven or eight, but every one of them was freed. There were not a lot of soldiers guarding the prison on this particular day, but the crowd was not big enough to frighten them. Many peasants and guards were killed. See names in Obituaries.

This stands for all the guards whom have been killed in the storming of Bastille. Only two were identified (see obituaries above), and the rest were headless.
Louis XVI was the king of France, and the husband of Marie Antoinette (see obituary below). King Louis XVI ruled and married at a very young age. He was tried for treason and sentenced to the guillotine.
Marie Antoinette was the queen of France, and the bride of King Louis XVI. She too ruled and married at a very young age (approximately 14 years old). Marie was tried for treason, just like her husband, and followed him to the Guillotine.

Fashion statement of the year: Marie Antoinette and Her Hats, Jewelry, and Gowns.
Although the queen Marie Antoinette has passed, the talk of her hats most definitely has not. There were many opinions on Marie's outrageous headwear. Some of her hats were normal designs and sizes, but others were the complete opposite. In many people's opinions, Marie's strangest hat was the hat with a large detailed ship on the top. Some say the ship looked as if it was sailing across her head. Marie was very into buying large and expensive hats. She also loved to buy expensive jewel necklaces and other jewelry. Money was never a problem for Marie, the third estate payed for most of her purchases anyway. Not to mention her abundance of dresses. Marie's wardrobe held nearly 300 different dresses for social engagements, private parties, and more. Marie Antoinette spent so much money on expensive jewelry, puffy dresses, and outrageous hats, that she earned the nickname Madame Deficit from the people of France.

Jack Roosevelt “Jackie Robinson” made history April 15, 1974. At age 28 he was the first person to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was the first African American to play baseball in the MLB. This historical day happened at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, NY, home of the Dodgers. Jackie had finally made his dream of playing in the MLB.
He had been persistent in de-segregating the MLB. His general manager Branch Rickey was also trying to end the color barrier rule in the MLB. Dodger’s manager Leo Durocher wanted Jackie to play up from the minors. He had said “I don’t care if a guy is yellow or if he has zebra stripes. I’m the manager of this team so what I say is, he play’s”.
This is how and why Jackie had finally made his debut in the majors. So it was from this point forward the doors were open to all players no matter their color.
