The importance of instilling a need to read

The importance of instilling a need to read | Creating a community of readers | Scoop.it

Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child.

That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading, and their role in promoting social mobility. It highlights why getting teenagers to read for pleasure is more than a sepia-tinted ambition for frustrated parents. It is a fundamental social issue.

This article addresses UK reading issues, but the message relates to reading curriculum in any country. We need to anchor classic reading choices with contemporary literature reflecting 21st c. teen experiences and concerns.

We also need to make sure school and public libraries are stocked with materials children and young adults WANT to read.

Ten Ways to Cultivate a Love of Reading in Students

Ten Ways to Cultivate a Love of Reading in Students | Creating a community of readers | Scoop.it

"As a teacher, I was obsessed with cultivating a love of reading in my students. I love to read, loved it as a kid too. I'm equally compelled to ensure that my own child loves reading -- and he does. I well aware that I'm on a mission -- but I also know it's a worthy one!

Here are ten suggestions for how any teacher, teaching any subject can participate in this mission, and how parents and administrators can help."

Connor McDade's curator insight, December 4, 2013 9:39 PM

This article features an initiative called "Real Men Read." Simply by creating posters showing real men of different backgrounds and appearances reading, the campaign attacks misconceptions regarding literacy and masculinity. The system started by first capturing male faculty and teachers reading, yet it has expanded to include a wide range of men worthy of being role models. By debunking the myth that literacy is not masculine, the campaign celebrates male readership, one teacher at a time, with specifically disciplinary examples of literacy. One middle school even bought hundreds of graphic novels to try and hook more boys on reading. Boys, who often struggle with attention span, can grow to hate reading, yet literacy is a key component to education, particularly those that seek further education after grade school.

"Scieszka was ahead of curve a decade ago when he launched the Guys Read initiative, a web-based literacy program for boys. Although it has already spawned three anthologies of stories for pre-teen boys, guysread.com is for really for guys of any age. Some of the subcategories under the “Books that Guys Read” section explain more than I could in much less time:

“Outer space, but without aliens”

“People being transformed into animals”

“How to build stuff”

“At least one explosion”"
