Girl, 17, tried to kill herself after first day in witness box during trial of ten men accused of grooming her for sex at 11

Girl, 17, tried to kill herself after first day in witness box during trial of ten men accused of grooming her for sex at 11 | CPS-Child Protection Services DCFS, DCYF, DCF, Foster Care- A failed System | Scoop.it

A teenager who accused a gang of 10 men of grooming her for sex from the age of 11 tried to kill herself during their trial, it emerged today.

The 17-year-old took an overdose after her first day of evidence, raising more concerns about how vulnerable witnesses are cared for during sex abuse trials.

These 10 men were accused of a string of rapes and other child sex offences against her and others in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

It came after the death of violin teacher Frances Andrade, who killed herself in January after being cross-examined at the trial of a man who was later convicted of abusing her at 14.

In one emotional exchange in court the 48-year-old had said the experience of being called a liar by Michael Brewer's legal team felt like 'rape all over again.’

Her son Olly, 21, who sat through her harrowing evidence, said: ‘Being repeatedly called a liar and a fantasist about a horrific part of her life in front of a court challenged her personal integrity and was more than even she could bear.’

In this latest case the teenager had be treated in hospital after her suicide attempt and the trial was stopped for several days in May until she was well enough to return to Oxford Crown Court.

A source close to her said she had taken the pills because of the 'stress and pressure she was feeling'.

In the arduous 11 days of evidence, the young woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was cross-examined by 10 defence barristers. The jury were unaware that she had attempted to take her own life.

Seven of the men accused of sex crime, aged between 19 to 29, were acquitted after the nine-week trial, The Times said today.

The jury also failed to reach verdicts on 15 charges aimed at the remaining three men, and the CPS said on Friday it would not seek a retrial.

But it still has raised questions about how witnesses are treated, although steps are taken to ease them into the process.

In this case all advocates and the judge removed their wigs while the witness gave evidence, there were regular breaks and steps were taken to ensure those accused and the alleged victims could not cross paths outside the courtroom.

But some say this is not enough.

The mother of a girl who was in the witness box during the trial of an Oxford paedophile ring at the Old Bailey this year said her child's treatment was 'nasty, cruel, vindictive and sarcastic' and she left feeling 'doubly abused'.

Meanwhile last year a child giving evidence at Stafford Crown Court in a abuse trial had panic attacks and flashbacks after three weeks in the witness box.

Daniel Pelka murder: Mother and partner to be sentenced

Daniel Pelka murder: Mother and partner to be sentenced | CPS-Child Protection Services DCFS, DCYF, DCF, Foster Care- A failed System | Scoop.it

A mother and her partner who subjected her son to an "absolutely wretched existence" before killing him are due to be sentenced later.

Magdelena Luczak and Mariusz Krezolek, were convicted of four-year-old Daniel Pelka's murder on Wednesday.

Daniel was beaten and starved by the pair and his emaciated body was likened by a doctor to a concentration camp victim, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Luczak, 27, and Krezolek, 34, had denied murder and blamed each other.

During their nine-week trial, the defendants gave a different version of events about what happened to Daniel, who eventually died from a head injury.

'Poisoned with salt'

The court heard that injury was one of 30 he suffered in the run up to his murder, which West Midlands Police said was "pre-planned and premeditated".

Jurors were also told how Daniel was left to die in his room - described as an unheated "cell" - for around 33 hours after suffering the head injury at his Coventry home, on 1 March last year.

Det Insp Chris Hanson said that before he died "[Daniel] was beaten, he was drowned and he was poisoned with salt - it was an absolutely wretched existence".

During the trial, the court heard how Krezolek and Luczak, who came to the UK from Poland in 2006, hid the horrifying abuse by claiming Daniel had an eating disorder.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said starving Daniel had been forced to steal food from fellow pupils and from school dustbins.

At time of death, he weighed just 1st 7lb (10.7kg) and had been reduced to the point of "skeletal emaciation".

Despite blaming each other, text messages between Krezolek and Luczak proved they worked as a team.

Serious case review

One text from Krezolek encouraged Luczak to lock Daniel in his box room. Another, from Luczak, said she had nearly drowned him.

Krezolek, a factory worker, and Luczak were both drinking heavily and taking drugs, at the time of the abuse.

Daniel's death is the subject of a serious case review by Coventry's Safeguarding Children Board and a report is due to be published in the next six weeks.

The review will look at why police and social services did not get involved after staff at Daniel's school - Coventry Little Heath Primary School - noticed bruising on his neck and what appeared to be two black eyes.

Krezolek had denied murder and causing or allowing Daniel's death.

Luczak denied murder but had admitted through her counsel that she was guilty of causing or allowing her son's death.

Sadly, extended family DID come forward immediately, but were denied access! The grandmother, Marilyn Koren, indicated she would care for baby Delonna Sullivan until matters were straightened out with authorities, but was told she could not due to "prior involvement" with the System. Years prior, she fled an abusive spouse and entered a woman's shelter with her own young daughter! She had done nothing wrong, but was wrongly penalized and the toll on her granddaughter was deadly.

Pimps targeting youths in the Florida foster care system

Pimps targeting youths in the Florida foster care system | CPS-Child Protection Services DCFS, DCYF, DCF, Foster Care- A failed System | Scoop.it

TALLAHASSEE -- Two state agency heads Wednesday warned a Senate panel that pimps and third-party labor contractors are targeting young people in the state foster care system.

Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins and Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Wansley Walters told the Senate Children, Families and Elder Affairs Committee that a new law is helping more victims of forced labor and prostitution, but that much work remains to be done.

He also said pimps have been targeting young people in state foster care. Wilkins said the youngsters were approached based on their vulnerabilities.

"Does it seem to be that the big lure is a supply of drugs?" Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, asked him. "Or is it money? Or something else?"

"I would say the biggest lure is love," Wilkins replied. "These guys basically say, 'I'm here for you. I'm going to be your protector, I'm going to be your support function.' And sure, they shower 'em with gifts and drugs and parties and limousines…and then the next thing you know, they ask 'em to take the next step, and then they're caught."

"It's not love," said Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood and the committee chair. "It's really slavery at the end of the day."

Since 2010, DCF has investigated 1,266 cases of alleged human trafficking involving children; of those, 717 were already in the DJJ system.

In 2011, about 200 trafficked minors received services through DCF and its community partners. Currently DCF is caring for about 100 child trafficking victims and has established three safe houses, with more to come...

Florida pushes for safe houses for child-prostitution victims (VIDEO) | CPS-Child Protection Services DCFS, DCYF, DCF, Foster Care- A failed System | Scoop.it

Via Sun Sentinel:

TALLAHASSEE — Amid growing concern from Florida's capital to the White House over human trafficking, the head of the state's social-services agency outlined plans Tuesday to create a network of "safe houses" and long-term-treatment facilities where underage sexual workers and other children held against their will could seek refuge and protection.

Currently, about 100 children in the foster system are victims of some form of human trafficking, either forced prostitution or forced labor, Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins said in an interview Tuesday.

Wilkins said that putting these children into DCF's existing group homes or foster homes could wind up being dangerous, because they could expose other children to the risk of being trafficked, particularly if the victim is still in contact with a pimp.

According to a 2011 study by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, Florida ranks third behind California and Texas in the number of reports to the center's anti-trafficking hotline of people — both children and adults — held in what amounts to slavery and exploited for either sex or manual labor...

2 Year Old Girl Dies In Government Hands Because Parents Smoked Pot While Watching A Movie

http://youtu.be/KBOtgeBeNAA

The Texas division of Child Protective Services may be ultimately to blame for a child’s death this past week after the child was taken from her parents because they smoked pot and put in foster care with the woman that would eventually end up killing her.

Round Rock, Texas resident Joshua Hill received an urgent call last Monday, July 29 requesting he rush to the Scott and White Children’s Emergency Hospital in Temple, about an hour north of Round Rock. Hill was only told it concerned his daughter, and was kept in the dark as to exactly what to expect.

“They wouldn’t tell me what condition she was in or what was wrong or what had happened. The only thing they would tell me is I needed to be there. When I got there, I found out that Alex was in a coma,” Hill told Austin ABC affiliate KVUE News.

When Hill arrived, he discovered his daughter was on life support, bruised and with head injuries.

Hill’s two-year-old daughter Alex, short for Alexandria, was removed from her parent’s home last November for “neglectful supervision” following her parents’ admission that they smoked pot after she was put to bed, reported KVUE.

“We never hurt our daughter. She was never sick, she was never in the hospital, and she never had any issues until she went into state care,” Hill told KVUE.

The first home Alex was placed in a was a dangerous one, according to her father. “She would come to visitation with bruises on her, and mold and mildew in her bag. It got to a point where I actually told CPS that they would have to have me arrested because I wouldn’t let her go back.”

2-year-old Alexandria Hill, screen capture from KVUE News.

She was next passed to the home of Texas MENTOR Sherill Small in Rockdale where she stayed up until her untimely demise. Hill says he visited her several times and that the home seemed much better than the last, his most recent visit being Thursday, July 25 when he got to take his daughter to McDonald’s.

“She got a little ‘Despicable Me 2′ toy in her happy meal and she loved it. She kept climbing up in my lap and she fed me french fries,” Hill recounted.

There was no warning that mere days later his daughter would be airlifted to the hospital where she would later die. An autopsy performed Friday found Alex died from blunt force trauma to the head.

According to KVUE, Hill needed just four more months before he could get his daughter back.

Texas CPS spokesperson Julie Moody says the agency is “still devastated,” but can in no way be held responsible as it was the Texas MENTOR program’s job to fully vet the foster parents.

“Texas MENTOR is responsible for doing their due diligence,” Moody explained.

The Texas MENTOR program is actually a subsidiary of The Mentor Network, a national web of service providers soliciting “Therapeutic Foster Care” in more than 33 states. On its website, it states that “Just about anyone” can be a mentor.

On Friday, the Texas MENTOR program came out with a statement offering their condolences for Alex’s passing, ensuring the foster mother met mentor standards and asserting their commitment to assist law enforcement.

“[...] The on-going law enforcement investigation and privacy laws, as well as the fact that our own internal review is not complete, limit our ability to provide some of the specific information requested. However, we can inform you that Sherill Small and her husband met the requirements to foster children, including background checks in accordance with state regulation (Texas Department of Public Safety criminal history database check, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Central Registry abuse/neglect database, Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI) criminal history and federal Office of Inspector General exclusion check)…”

KVUE News found state records “show 15 total deficiencies for the Austin branch of that agency over the past two years,” the branch that most likely acquired Small as a foster parent. They also found that four of those 15 times were for failure to perform proper background checks.

While Small is being held on a $100,000 bond and is being charged with murder, proper light need also be shed on Texas CPS’s initial decision to take Alexandria from what seemed like harmless, loving parents.

The media is quick to lay the blame on the murderous foster parent and the agency that provided her – and rightfully so – but the system that stole Alexandria from her parents in the first place should also be scrutinized.

The ruthless system that can legally kidnap children from their parents, literally tearing families apart, for such trivial crimes as smoking pot is indeed an authoritarian one.

While some blame stringent drug laws for Alex’s unfortunate tragedy, but the true culprit may ultimately be the CPS system that facilitated her abduction.

A similar CPS debacle happened in 2004 when Tausha Cram’s daughter, Adrianna Romero Cram, was taken from her after anonymous tips complained she was unfit for parenting and using drugs. In 2004 Adrianna, under the protective custody of the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), was sent to Omealca, Veracruz, a village in southern Mexico, to live with her biological father’s family.

The teachers and principal at Adrianna’s new school began noticing she was losing weight and arriving with multiple cuts, bruises and burns, including one she said was derived from her foster parents placing her hands over a stove. On June 13, 2005, she died. Initial reports to DHS stated she had died of natural causes, but her foster parents were eventually convicted of murder. Oregon’s DHS announced in March 2009 they’d stop sending foster children to other countries.

This should be a red flag warning to parents that the state’s power has risen to the point that it can arbitrarily snatch children for petty, non-violent crimes and wash its hands clean of liability if that child dies while in its “protective” custody.

Infowars contacted CPS spokesperson Julie Moody who directed us to the Williamson County Court.

2 year-old Alexandria was taken out of her home for "child neglect" while he parents put her to bed and smoked weed. The first home she was put in her father described as "dangerous" Alex always had bruises and her bag was moldy and had mildew in it. The second home she was put in was with Ms.Sherri Small, her backround check was fine and the home seemed normal, her father got to take her out to eat and everything! A couple days later alex was in the hosotial in a coma for head trauma. She died later on. This just teaches you never know what goes on behind closed doors and you never know when its the last time you'll see someone.

ORLANDO, Fla. —Department of Children and Families administrators are moving towards firing an Orlando employee who is charged with multiple counts of possessing child porn.

The move comes after 58-year-old Ed Krakowski refused to resign.

Krakowski reportedly told his employer Tuesday, the child porn charges leveled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are just a misunderstanding.

DCF confirms Krakowski was arrested at his Seminole County home Friday on seven counts of possessing child pornography. He bonded out of jail hours later.

"He was very humble, as I understand, and he also indicated that this was a misunderstanding," said DCF spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner.

Based on that, DCF said since Krakowski refused to resign he was issued a letter notifying him of the agency's plan to fire him within 10 days.

Meanwhile, he'll remain suspended from his job in telecommunications within the agency. The $28,000-a-year position did not give him access to the at-risk children it is DCF's mission to protect...

Florida woman arrested after 9-year-old child in her care eats crack cocaine on Christmas | CPS-Child Protection Services DCFS, DCYF, DCF, Foster Care- A failed System | Scoop.it
A Spring Hill woman faces a charge of abuse after a 9-year-old child ate a piece of crack under her care, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Kimberly Losurdo, 45, of 11233 Riddle Drive, is charged with child abuse. She is in the Hernando County Detention Center with her bond set at $5,000.

About 1:30 a.m. today, Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to a residence in Spring Hill in reference to a 9-year old child who was having convulsions and losing consciousness, the sheriff's office said.

The child was taken to a local hospital where blood tests found cocaine in the child's system, the sheriff's office said. The child was then taken out of county for advanced care and hospital staff called the Department of Children and Families.

The child said an "irregular shaped, rock like" substance was found in the bathroom and they ate it on Christmas, the sheriff's office said. Soon after, they became ill and started vomiting and deteriorating slowly.

DCF removed three children — ages 9, 11, and 16 — from the home, according to the sheriff's office. The child in question is expected to make a full recovery...
