SOHAR, Oman — Turbaned troops in armoured cars have put the genie of Arab revolts back in the bottle in Sohar, a reputed hometown of "Sinbad the Sailor" and focus of violent protests in normally sleepy Oman.
(Reuters) - Omani protesters asked the public prosecutor on Wednesday to charge members of the security forces responsible for killing two demonstrators in separate clashes in the northeast industrial city of Sohar.
AMMAN — The prime minister of Jordan said on Monday people have the right to free speech and that the government will set aside special areas for protests, in an apparent bid to ease tensions after bloody clashes last week.
New protests against the government have erupted in Oman, despite a series of reforms announced by the country's rulers. Several hundred state petroleum workers rallied Tuesday outside of the agency's headquarters in Muscat to demand higher wages. There also are reports of demonstrations in other towns.
