This is article shows the extent of the counterfeit drug problem. Last year the authorities in Panama found poison in 260,000 bottles of cold medicine. This shows that we need to do more to eradicate this problem.

5.1 Million doses of counterfeit drugs have been seized in the last 3 quarters. This is a problem that is getting bigger and there is no end in sight. We need to put technology in the end consumers hands that will help them detect counterfeit perscription drugs before it does harm. I am glad to see Phizer is doing something.

Pfizer is working on some incredible technology to fight the counterfeit prescription drug problem. With a 34 percent increase in seizures of counterfeit drugs over the past year, I am glad someone is working on addressing this problem.

 

Facts on counterfeit drugs

• Counterfeit Pfizer products have been confirmed in at least 106 countries.
• Counterfeit versions of at least 65 Pfizer products have been detected, including Aricept, Celebrex, Lipitor, Norvasc, Zoloft and Viagra.
• Counterfeit versions of 26 Pfizer medicines have been detected in the legitimate supply chain of at least 59 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
• Since 2004, Pfizer has prevented more than 157.8 million counterfeit tablets from reaching patients.
