After Effects and the state of GPU computing. By Phil Rhodes

After Effects and the state of GPU computing. By Phil Rhodes | CorwrineLoe | Scoop.it

Posted by Phil Rhodes on January 17, 2013 •

What exactly is GPU computing and what does and doesn't use it?

"As we saw back in December in Eyeon's informative video, GPU computing is a very powerful technique that, during the last year or two, has begun to break out of a niche. The original application of graphics cards was, obviously, video games. 3D rendering software such as Max and Lightwave have been using games-oriented graphics hardware to produce approximate previews of the scene for some time. More recently, the world's most popular operating system learned how to draw its user interface using more features on the graphics card, saving the CPU from spending its valuable time working out which window is on top.

What's new

What's new is the application of graphics processing units to calculations which are not, at least directly, graphics-related. Projects such as Folding@Home have used GPUs for simulation in medical research, and in the last couple of versions, some postproduction software has begun to apply the same technology to rendering effects. Even video games have followed the curve, and now commonly do physics simulation for both rigid objects and soft bodies, smoke, and liquid.

While this is all good, but it could be better.

To understand why, it's probably worth recapping how modern GPUs work and what they're therefore capable of doing."

Trends in the property market: students in Glasgow

Increase in the supply of student accommodation in Glasgow.

Via infozone
more...
infozone's curator insight, July 15, 2013 6:22 PM

Home to the UK’s second largest student population and no less than four universities, Glasgow is home also to a high proportion of tenants demanding excellent value and unique terms based around student living from their landlords, be they buy to let investors or Glasgow property agents.

While demand for university places remains relatively buoyant, especially for undergraduate courses, and supply in the housing market is not yet plentiful in Glasgow, commitment from property developers and newfound will on the part of banks, incentivised in part by pledges of public finance by the government, are slowly but surely increasing the supply of flats and houses available to the city’s student population.

http://www.totalstudents.com/student-guide/glasgow/

As young families and recent entrants to the jobs market begin to take up places on help to buy schemes and banks find themselves compelled by the governments who bailed them out at the height of the global financial crisis to raise capital and provide safe credit to the taxpayers who require mortgages and have been unable to find them, moves out of city apartments and house shares to new builds, particularly in the East End, are leaving increasing numbers of city properties available to let.

Given the likelihood of demand in the rentals market remaining comparatively stable, despite hard times for students and the decision of a percentage to decline university offers and student loans in favour of school leaving employment, this leaves everything to play for when it comes to the student tenant and landlord relationship.  Competitive landlords will want to ensure they are providing the best value Glasgow property and service to their tenants.  This means being up to speed with the new student lifestyles, finances and budgets facing both undergraduates and postgraduates.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/news/tuition-fees/

For postgraduates, cuts to research grants across arts, sciences and humanities means that there are fewer funded degrees available.  Those who are fortunate enough to secure funding will be more likely to work part time, if not full time while pursuing part time research.  The same goes for undergraduates, who are facing a number of socioeconomic and financial factors that have dramatically altered the landscape of undergraduate life.

The importance of these changes for landlords letting student tenants is to appreciate the opportunities associated with the student population.  For instance, with students forced to enter employment much earlier than on graduating and to go the extra mile to maintain job security with demand for employment being so unmet in the current economy, 12 month leases, as opposed to leases excluding the long academic summer vacation, are the norm.

Home, EU and international students are all less likely to travel home during their vacations and reading weeks, not only in light of the increased pressure to keep their jobs and to take on hours in order to cover the cost of student living, but also in light of the fact that travel fares are increasingly seen as an expensive luxury, rather than a necessity.

[~*~] Mikey Garcia vs Juan Manuel Lopez Live Spot News!

Saturday June 15, Bloody Elbow presents live fight coverage of Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez, live on HBO. HBO Boxing After Dark: Garcia vs. Lopez airs this Saturday, June 15 live on HBO with a fight time of 10:45 p.m. ET. Bloody Elbow will have live fight coverage, including results and discussion, right here.

The story of this fight is all about testing Mikey Garcia. The undefeated 25 year old has made a clean move up the ranks since turning pro in 2006, steadily facing, and defeating, harder and harder competition. He comes in tonight off of the biggest win of his career, defeating Orlando Salido in January. He's also the Ring champion in the 126 pound Featherweight division. Yet with all of these wins and accolades, it's tempting to say that Garcia has not really been tested. A highly technical fighter, Garcia has been able to use his skills to outbox everyone he's come across, but he is yet to face a really talented boxer that draws him into a true fight. That may change this weekend.

More Garcia vs. Lopez coverage:

Bloody Elbow | Bad Left Hook

Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez is a very popular and entertaining fighter - one who has seemingly on the verge of true superstar status not long ago. But just as he was headed for the marquee fights, a pair of losses to Salido sent him crashing back down to Earth. He's 2-0 since his last loss to Salido, and coming off a quick KO win in April. Even if Lopez is not the fighter we once thought he could become, he is still a dangerous opponent who can give Garcia fits. Juanma has the kind of aggression Garcia has not often seen, and if he puts it on display, Garcia may have to dig deep - something we have not really seen from the calm and collected Garcia.

So it's Garcia looking to continue his rise, and Lopez looking to reestablish himself and right the ship. Find out who imposes his will Saturday night.

Opening the HBO card will be Terrence Crawford. The undefeated Crawford is coming off a solid win over Breidis Prescott in March. He takes on the challenge of Alejandro Sanabria in a fight where Crawford is the favorite.

Join us here at Bloody Elbow for HBO Boxing After Dark Garcia vs. Lopez results, discussion, and live fight coverage this Saturday June 15.

Entry Level Bank Branch Positions

Entry Level Bank Branch Positions | CorwrineLoe | Scoop.it
Search for Banking Jobs at some of the world's top companies using Singapore's leading recruitment consultancy - Michael Page International.

Via infozone

infozone's curator insight, June 12, 2013 11:31 PM

Working at a bank gives the employee plenty of accounting and customer service experience, and there are many entry-level positions available for interested applicants.

College graduates can look forward to a number of different and prolific entry-level jobs to showcase their skills in a well-known banking branch, For those without the book experience, customer service tellers are much needed jobs, and account management and finances make for a more diverse job environment that one would first expect. Depending on customer service experience and other job information, applicants can look forward to a decent base salary and an exceptional workplace.

The bank teller is usually the first experience for many people at a bank. These customer service representatives must have decent computer skills and be able to make their way around the programs in use effectively. Time management in terms of helping customers is also a plus. Some of these jobs can require additional training before being put on the floor, but typically they are the most readily available and lax branch positions. Banking jobs in this sector are great for college students and newly graduated individuals.

http://www.careerrookie.com/cc/s/bank-finance-jobs

Support positions include mortgage and loan lenders. These people will have to have much more education than a traditional teller, as well as knowledge of the various bank’s policies on accepting new accounts and loans. Experience and training is required in order to get to know the ins and outs of the business and effectively reach quotas for new customers and lending money to existing policy holders. The pay for these jobs tend to be much higher due to the needed college and job experience.

Bookkeeping at a bank requires the applicant to be knowledgeable and extremely organized. While some employees will be more related to human resources, others tend to the monthly quotas and needs of the banks. This includes everything from the amount of cash processed to individual loan applications that have been approved. Money management and employee salary are only two of the responsibilities of bookkeepers at banks.

Multitasking capabilities of branch employees are typically put to the test towards the end of the month, when workload is higher and time is shorter.

For more ambitious applicants, national and local treasury jobs can be an attractive option. These jobs are typically placed on high end employer websites that are only looking for the best of the best when it comes to both experience and service. Oftentimes, a number of years are needed in order to qualify to apply, plus an exceptional amount of management and customer service experience. Dealing with national banks abroad is another plus when considering applicants, as many treasury employers work with other financial institutions in order to invest money and offer insight into the current financial state of the company. Effective management of funds given is a skill that is acquired through both experience and hands on training with a more qualified employee.

Sharp perspective on entrepreneurship from a 19 year old. If all entrepreneurs had this fresh yet oddly wise view, more startups would have some success.

When the initial focus is on creating the absolutely best user experience possible, and not letting monitization get in the way or simplicity and ease of use, you have a winner.

The problem is, most angel investors (at least the seasoned ones) will not be able to look past NOT having a business model/financial projections. The enlightened few will get it. LIke the enlightened few entrepreneurs will get matched up with them.

I expect this approach to take years to take hold. I suppose twitter and facebook started this way.

The politics and demographics of food stamp recipients

The politics and demographics of food stamp recipients | CorwrineLoe | Scoop.it

by RICH MORIN (Pew Research Center)

Democrats are about twice as likely as Republicans to have received food stamps at some point in their lives—a participation gap that echoes the deep partisan divide in the U.S. House of Representatives, which on Thursday produced a farm bill that did not include funding for the food stamp program.

Overall, a Pew Research Center survey conducted late last year found that about one-in-five Americans (18%) has participated in the food stamp program, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. About a quarter (26%) lives in a household with a current or former food stamp recipient.

Of these, about one-in-five (22%) of Democrats say they had received food stamps compared with 10% of Republicans. About 17% of political independents say they have received food stamps.

The share of food stamp beneficiaries swells even further when respondents are asked if someone else living in their household had ever received food stamps. According to the survey, about three in ten Democrats (31%) and about half as many Republicans (17%) say they or someone in their household has benefitted from the food stamp program. MORE

Ergonomic Office Supplies

Ergonomics play an important role in desk and office equipment

Via infozone
more...
infozone's curator insight, June 12, 2013 11:42 PM

The advent of computers has led to a rash of preventable physical ills, such as carpal tunnel and back pain. Fortunately, many companies are creating ergonomic office supplies to prevent pain while working.

Preventing back pain while working at a computer all day can be difficult if cheap chairs and desks are used. Even the type of keyboard and mouse can have an impact on the physical structure and pain of the body. By purchasing more ergonomic items that are functional and painless to operate, individuals can spend longer times working without pain.

Setting an advantageous height setting for office chairs is an important method of preventing pain. Correcting an otherwise ungainly height can work wonders in preventing spine problems in the future. Sitting up too high and too straight can put unnecessary stress on the lower back and cause pain in the future. Adjusting the height of the desk in correlation with the chair is the best way to get the ideal vantage point. Accessibility to the keyboard, mouse, and other commonly used objects should be taken into consideration as well.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2345859,00.asp

Posture helps to further relax the body and prevent unneeded stress on joints and the back. Sitting up straight, contrary to popular belief, does not help in preventing back pain. Instead, a slight slouch with the legs at a ninety degree angle is the most natural and relaxed way to sit. Keeping feet flat or suspended on a resting bar are also good ways to help with relaxation and stress prevention. As well as this, getting up and moving around every hour or so helps to prevent joints from locking and getting stiff as the day goes on.

Ergonomic keyboard drawers serve to save space as well as make the typing device more accessible to office workers. Instead of hunching over in a chair, keyboards come directly within reach of the hands and fingers for easy use. These drawers can typically hold both the keyboard and the mouse, effectively clearing a lot of space on top of the desk for more important items. Mouse and hand rests can prevent carpal tunnel by placing the wrist in a more natural manner. This enables it to rotate and move more efficiently without stressing the joints.

Mice and split keyboards are great office products for the individual who wants to work long hours but keep their good health. More plush mice have rests for the hand and are more comfortable to hold than blockier and plastic products. A surplus of quick keys and buttons can make accessing applications and shortcuts on the computer easier, saving time and energy in reaching the keys on the keyboard. The idea to make sure that suing each device is made more comfortable and relaxing to use, instead of painful and stressful on the joints. To effectively protect the long term health of office employees, it is always advisable to invest in more ergonomic and comfortable office products.

Four ways to automate your social marketing - Econsultancy | CorwrineLoe | Scoop.it
In today’s social orientated marketing landscape most business have taken the leap of faith into social marketing. If you are one of these business you know how time consuming and resource intensive social marketing can be.

Condensed...

1. Use smart scheduling for maximum engagement

Using a service like Swayy or Buffer will increase your productivity, allowing you to share more quality content each week which will result in more engagement and more fans and followers.

2. Spread the workload among your staff

Designate time slots to each individual and spread the workload among your entire team. The more your team gets involved with your social marketing the more likely they are to feel connected to your brand and be able to provide important insights on how you can improve your business.

3. Be aggressive with social buttons

Automate the growth of your social communities by placing social buttons linked to your social profiles within emails, newsletters, and other marketing material.

4. Open your blog up to guest bloggers

If you plan to publish two posts a week (the minimum in my opinion) then choose one of these slots and open it up to guest bloggers from your niche. Every niche has many bloggers and these bloggers are always looking for guest blogging opportunities.

Forget "big box" Pandora. Slacker Radio blows it away.

Slacker is the most complete music service on earth. Enjoy millions of songs and hundreds of expertly-programmed stations for free - on demand, online and on mobile.

Marty Koenig's curator insight, April 12, 2013 10:27 AM

Slacker blows away Pandora. Go ahead. Prove me wrong in the comments section below.

I’ve been listening to radio over the internet since, well, the internet began. Online music has come a long way since the days of downloading indie songs from a dial-up BBS or searching on gopher.

“Today’s music listeners are consummate curators of their own music experience.”

Forget iTunes and downloading MP3s. I did that for years. No longer need to. I’ve got a 500 gigs of music I’ve bought and listed to over the years that just sits there unnoticed and unused by me these days.

  • Much, much larger music library – like 40M vs Pandora’s 10M and iHeart’s … who knows.
  • Too tight restrictions on number of skips or thumbs up/down per hour.  Pandora has 6 skips per hour per station limit, even on my paid version.
  • They both play directly on my Home Theatre A/V Receiver very nicely. I think Slacker sounds better.
  • Pandora uses some algorithm to put together their stations based on your choice. Slacker’s stations are actually put together by people.
  • Slacker has stations that music celebs put together. Listen to a station built by John Mayer himself.
  • Via headphones (at least on my high quality Bose ‘phones) Slacker definitely sounds better than Pandora.
  • On my computer with cheapie little speakers and sub, Slacker sounds much better than Pandora.

“Slacker has artists come and play in their own studio. Where’s iHeart and Pandora’s studio? That tells me they care about their listeners enough to pay attention to what I want a station to do.”

  • Slacker has contests.
  • Slacker creates stations like “Cocktail Madness” for fans of Mad Men.
  • Pandora says it’s got a 192 Kbps bit rate, but I’m an audiophile and doesn’t seem to sound any better that Slacker. In fact, Slacker sounds better to me.
  • Slacker’s new User Experience is well thought out, and makes sense. Easy to find exactly what you want with the fewest clicks.
  • Slacker customer support rocks. They are responsive when you have a question or problem. Their ticketing system is easy to use and works well.
  • Slacker has a station called “Favorites Mashup Station” that plays all my faves and adds a few more suggestions here and there.
  • Pandora has no on-demand. Slacker is pretty much all on-demand – like radio in the year 2013 should be.
  • Mobile app has a high bit rate setting if you need it. I haven’t needed it.
  • One each station, Slacker lets me dial in the fine tune settings by age, related artists, favorites, and popularity. Not even sure what Pandora can do, but it’s probably not that super-fine tuning.
  • On Slacker I can listen to songs, albums and playlists whenever I want.
  • And the BIG ONE: Slacker lets me find an album and play just the album. You can’t do that on Pandora.
  • And a BIGGER ONE: Slacker lets me find an artist I like, and play only songs from that artist. A Single Artist Station. Good luck trying to do that on Pandora.

I have premium paid accounts for Slacker and Pandora. The only reason I bought Pandora was to compare it to Slacker. I’ll drop that after my subscription runs out.

I stopped using iHeart radio, since it kept bothering me to pay for their service without giving me any idea of what I would get for my money. They started to play so many commercials I got sick of their pushiness to make me pay. Plus, its run by Clear Channel - the radio equivalent of “Wal-Mart meets the NYTimes.”

If you are a big box music mentality, then go for Pandora an limit you music listening experience. If you want a service that focuses on the music listener, get Slacker Radio.
