Make e-Learning work: Outcome learning

Make e-Learning work: Outcome learning | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

A serie of blog posts by Kasper Spiro on his Outcome learning approach.

Outcome learning is an approach for learning in corporate environments. Kasper presents this approach in a serie of 6 posts presenting different view points (the manager, the developer, the learner, the vendor).

As I was looking at some information around learning impact  which I often find unsufficiently at the heart of our solutions. I concur with Kasper view on letting the people decide how they want to learn as long as the expected outcomes are well determined which requires good assessment of the gaps to cover. Some good ideas there.

Instructional Designers: Figuring out how many hours it takes to develop training « Dr. Ray Pastore's Instructional Technology Blog | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

From the blog of Ray Pastore. Ray brought together various research on a very touchy topic: the amount of time it takes to develop training. As a learning organisation, it is must to understand how you do against these estimation (even if they do not seem to apply always to your own solution) as this is what your customer will use to establish how expensive you are.  To me a key performance indicator...

Note: I found out about this blog through a linked-in discussion within the eLearning guild group. These discussions are quite often very good - and straight to the point!

Technology: Is the cloud hastening the demise of the LMS?

Technology: Is the cloud hastening the demise of the LMS? | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

Something we have heard for a while now:  the LMS as-we-know-it is heavily impacted by the cloud technologies appearing. i believe however that the Corporations needs are still there - if not even stronger than before: compliance and certification is a must nowadays, and tracking/managing learning content, especially for mandatory learning, is key. I expect that the solutions that will emerge will demonstrate a better split between the learning content hosting and the learning content tracking. This is what the next standards proposes too.

In the blog post refered here, Jeff Katzman shares his view on the impact of the cloud and the freedom it gives to the learning designer in what content and tools they use.

Training – Training March/April 2012 : View From 30,000 Feet

Training – Training March/April 2012 : View From 30,000 Feet | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

View From 30,000 Feet... Good article on the Delta Air lines/Northwest Airlines Corp. merger impact on training, in Training magazine March/april 2012, by Lorry freifeld.

As a case study, it describes the challenges faced by the training depts, the variety of solutions used in both companies, the compliance impacts, etc.

After 3 years, it is interesting to read what they have accomplished, what remains to accomplish and what will not be done. I like very much the pragmatic approach of the "adopt and go" rather than trying to mix the best of both worlds. Accepting the fact that you might lose some valuable benefits of a solution that you do not adopt is a very difficult thing to do, but I am convinced that it is a win at the end -as long as the criterias to chose for the best solutions are transparent.

The International Quality Label for eLearning Courseware

The International Quality Label for eLearning Courseware | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

The official launch of epprobate will be on Wednesday, the 21st of March 2012 in Brussels.

Interesting approach to try and establish a quality label for e_learning. I do wonder if this would not bring a risk of limiting the creativity and innovation of the Instructional designers...  But the initiative is certainly worth being followed.

In short: There is already a huge provision of eLearning courseware out there, and every day different kind of new material like Web Based Training (WBT), Computer Based Training (CBT), Game Based Learning (GBL), Videos, Open Educational Resources (OER), Mobile Learning Apps etc. are added. For the learner it becomes very difficult to distinguish what is of good quality and worth buying.

Social Learning Tools Are Fine, But Not Critical For All Educational Models

Social Learning Tools Are Fine, But Not Critical For All Educational Models | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

An excellent post by Phil Hill (on e-Literate):

Technology supports learning differently depending on the educational model:

- Great potential when improving Traditional education then it brings benefits of technical features of social, mobilen big data to the classroom model...

- when enabling New Models of Education (e.g. competency-based learning model) then the needs are different and the social and collaboration tools are not critical for learning platform support.

Phil concludes on raising the importance to define how well platforms (LMS, ...) supports the actual education model(s).

How Big Data Will Reshape Learning as we Know It

How Big Data Will Reshape Learning as we Know It | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

From David Kelly blog: a view on the 2012 TechKnowledge Conference 'Big data' topic - and how this will probably shape the future of how we work- including on how to propose solutions to our learners.

Many companies are investing heavily in Big Data (Analytics as we call it @IBM). Interesting to see how David perceives it as a "great opportunity" - where we often see it presented as the next "big challenge". Both sides of the same coin. I always like the positive view of course!

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development: SCORM-ify YouTube Videos with ScoTube

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development: SCORM-ify YouTube Videos with ScoTube | Corporate Learning | Scoop.it

From Brnet Schlenker. Short information on the ScoTube launch from the SCORM.com. Scorm-ifying content elements that could otherwise not be identified as learning elements is a heavy trend. And something that proves very useful to "capture" part of the informal learning content available within a company's intranet (or internet).

I think it is worth to keep an eye at this ScoTube.

An excellent summary on several key concepts/ideas/statement of the corporate learning status: A) on the work environment changes (...according to Jay we live in the Conceptual Age); B) Learning over time: the more experienced the learner the more informal learning happens (which is not the training department's comfort zone); C) How Informal learning happens in the workscape; D) How social Networks support this informal learning.

ECBCheck_Presentation_EN.pdf

eLearning quality checklist as defined by the European Foundation for Quality in e Learning (EFQUEL).

This presentation lists important criteria that any e Learning course must meet. As such, it will not define how you create your content, nor how creative your solution is. But it will certainly help you to measure how you meet the formal customer requirements. It leaves your Instructional designer with the creative task to define a solution that is attractive to student. Because a course with no quality  will not teach anything to the audience while quality without some attractiveness will lose your student too.

Clive on Learning: How much is an authoring tool worth?

Clive's point of view on the difference between a tool and a toy - talking about Snap! Empower by Trivantis.

As we are continuously put under cost pressure, the temptation is indeed big to consider that 1.5K is too much of an investment for an Authoring Tool.

If you will only use it as an amateur, it is indeed expensive. If you intend to deliver services with your Authoring tool, the cost should not be the primary concern, but the quality of service that you can deliver with it. Always ask yourself: what is my added value? not Am I too expensive? Anyway you will always be more expensive than someone else.

eLearningTV - challenge of M-Learning when using employees various devices

"According to Gartner research, employees have taken control from corporate IT departments. In the future, employees will be using multiple devices including tablets and smart phones of their choosing".

This will cause quite some impact on the corporate IT dept in terms of security, networking, etc...  When we will be collecting requirements to know on which infrastructure will an e-learning course need to play, our customers will not be able to define it precisely - leaving to us the need to deliver eLearning modules playable on any kind of devices. Talk about a challenge! And a risk to have to limit our creativity to meet the smallest common denominator of these devices and bandwidths issues.

This eLearningTV 10min movie presents some of the challenge, with an interview of Chris Van Wingerden (domiKnow) presenting the Claro platform.
