I love the idea of taking a noise retreat when I go into the city. Were I working in a large office in the common cube environment, I would be taking noise breaks. Regardless, I like taking mindfulness breaks during the day. They help me get back on task if I have wondered.

(From the article): Take a noise retreat. Even if you can’t cut down on the noise in your daily life, you can find periods of respite. For me, that’s still escaping to my uncle’s farm, to the beach, or to the North Georgia mountains. For others, it’s taking advantage of “silent retreats,” where participants go to actively avoid speaking or experiencing other man-made sounds. Ecologist Gordon Hempton has found only 12 spots in the U.S. free of human-made noise for intervals of 15 minutes or more, but there are a number of resorts that promise as much escape from noise as possible without a long hike into the Alaskan wilderness.

It’s ironic that, as more of our tasks become mental, our environments make the concentration so necessary for intellectual labor more difficult. The noise permeating our environments can impact our health, concentration, and happiness. As silence becomes rarer and more valuable, we’d be wise to seek it out.

I was magnesium deficient. Had such bad leg cramps that I had to get out of bed twice nightly to walk them out.


I learned that all magnesium is not created equal, and you need to find out which form works for you. I found those with magnesium citrate made me get the runs, even if I spaced out the dosage. Experts say it means you are taking in too much magnesium. I learned this was not the case for me. I needed the right form of magnesium and lots of it! I found ReMag, a concentrated liquid works best for me.


I also learned that having enough potassium is just as important to reducing leg cramps. I drink 8 oz of low sodium V-8 juice for the potassium, 900 mg.

Like this in particular, "Model the behavior and communication you’d like to see in your counterpart, even when things get tense, and you’ll get much farther than trying to force the other person to do things your way." Easy to say, hard to do in tense, emotional moments. Taking a couple of deep breaths of mindfulness helps.

Others may want you to do everything ASAP. Still not very useful. If this is the response, you’ll just have to say, “I’ll work on Project A first, then.” If you get an objection, then ask what you should do instead. Point out you can only do one thing at a time effectively, and ask—again, without rancor—for assistance in prioritizing. There’s no human way you can complete five significant projects all due Friday without something breaking down. Because you’re only flesh and blood, that thing will probably be you.

When I am overbooked, I find it's easy enough to find another person who is happy to take the project since I am a consultant. It's harder in the corporate environment, yet if you are specific enough about what you do and don't do, it's becomes easier to say no.

I have found that aromatherapy affects my life and like to use lemon and lavender daily on my body. When I had trouble sleeping I used lavender drops on paper in one of those odor spreaders that you plug into an electric outlet. It puts out the odor while you are sleeping. Nice.
