What I Believe Right Now | What do YOU believe? | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Tom Vander Ark writes ten statements entitled "What I Believe Right Now" as a way to articulate his evolving view of how to impact student learning outcomes and extend academic equity.

My personal faves in no particular prioritized order are:

8. Performance matters

7. Most relationships are local, most learning opps, global

4. A good school is the best antidote for poverty. Poverty is a condition, not an excuse, and....

1. Common Core Standards are a good start!

Sixty percent of U.S. voters say they have seen, read, or heard "nothing at all" about the new standards for English/language arts and mathematics in the past six months, a figure unchanged since an early poll in August of 2011. Another 20 percent replied "not much" to the question.

Text Structure... say what????

Text Structure... say what???? | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Reading anchor standard #5  states that students must be able to analyze and explain how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text relate to each other and the whole.

What visual scaffolds can we provide to help students "see" and explain text structures?

Teaching Authentic Writing in a Socially Mediated World

Teaching Authentic Writing in a Socially Mediated World | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Narrative, expository and argumentative writing are required writing genres in the CCSS. I particularly appreciate the writer's list of contemporary writing activities that provide many different forms within writing genres, especially with respect to social media and online writing, which many of our students will be expected to do in college/careers.

As a bonus, many of these work well with schools that have rolled out 1:1 or iPad programs. Plus, students seem to engage with technology. It's not what you use, but how you use it.

New York provides much-needed Common Core assessment guidance

New York provides much-needed Common Core assessment guidance | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

A few states have started to provide more guidance for teachers in order to plan for teaching with CCSS. To that end, the New York department of education has released a set of sample assessment questions for grades 3-8 for both ELA and math.

But are the new samples any different than the assessments they replaced? Ms. Porter-Magee takes a deeper look at the ELA samples and gives her "two cents."

Finding the Write Stuff: A Science Teacher Puts on Her Literacy Hat

Finding the Write Stuff: A Science Teacher Puts on Her Literacy Hat | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

We've talked about it for years.  All teachers in the building (not just the ELA teachers) should be versed in helping students read and write across the curriculum. The Common Core expects this as identified in the literacy standards for Social Studies and Science.

In this article, the writer states, "Reading and writing skills should not be the responsibility of English teachers alone, but of all teachers. I teach biology, so coaching my students in writing isn't exactly in my comfort zone. But among my ninth grade students, writing and research skills were weak. As teachers, we often ask our students to step outside their comfort zones. Sometimes teachers need to do that too." *applause-hollar-cheer*

"It's important for teachers to look outside our own curricular comfort zones in order to provide unique learning opportunities to students. I gained not only insight into the lives of my students, but also valuable supplements to my curriculum, and overwhelming pride in my students."

She's the kind of teacher from which I could learn Biology!

America Achieves: Welcome

America Achieves: Welcome | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

This is a video and lesson resource project to assist teachers and principals around the nation. The video modules on this site exemplify the key shifts that the Common Core brings to classroom pedagogy.

The intro video on the home page is worth taking a look and focuses on some of the key takeaways of the CCSS:

-Think depth not breadth.

-Slow down in order to go faster.

-Take time to dig in to the standards themselves to understand the expectations - own them!

-The CCSS  reflect higher level thinking, problem solving and strong teaching pedagogy.
