Tony Bennett's Florida education priorities: Common Core and teacher evaluations

Tony Bennett's Florida education priorities: Common Core and teacher evaluations | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

What do you plan to do once you get to Florida? Do you have marching orders from the board, or from the governor?  There were three issues, one of them I have already done. That is, get very acclimated with the governor's education agenda and be thinking about how I help advance that agenda. Specifically within that, the governor asked me to really focus on two things immediately. The first of those is implementation of the Common Core. That is of paramount importance.

27 Ways To Publish Student Thinking

27 Ways To Publish Student Thinking | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Publishing student thinking can be among the most powerful ways to improve learning.

There are a variety of reasons for this, but the biggest reason is that the “threat” of publishing moves the lodestone from the classroom to the “real world.” This, of course, changes everything.

Note that publishing finished products and the thinking process itself are two very different things–and the idea here is to publishing the thinking itself.

Deb Gardner's insight:

Think, plan, collaborate, revise, publish. The digital tools identified in this blog post cross grade levels and content areas and are aligned with ELA CCSS anchor standards 5 and 6.

Literature and Nonfiction: Common-Core Advocates Strike Back

Literature and Nonfiction: Common-Core Advocates Strike Back | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

As we've told you, a particular slice of the common standards in English/language arts has become pretty flammable lately: the rise of nonfiction reading. The standards' expectation that students read more informational text has sparked fear—some would say misinterpretation—that great works of literature will be displaced from classroom instruction.

Deb Gardner's insight:

I'd say it's looking more like a #corewar with a bit of #smack tossed back and forth as exhibited by both sides using evidence, writing arguments and counter claims. Wonder if the #students are watching...

Digital Learning Contributes to Deeper Learning

Digital Learning Contributes to Deeper Learning | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it
Deb Gardner's insight:

In reflecting on the infographic above, I'm optimistic knowing that we are beginning to implement standards that are no longer an isolated grade-level  checklist of facts to be memorized and tested, but intead a coherent set of spiraling standards that press for deeper learning, close reading, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.  Augmented by digital tools, these skills, knowledge and applications will prepare students for their contributions in careers, college and beyond.  We're heading in the right direction, IMO.

Each video highlights one mathematics standard, runs between 10 and 20 minutes, and shows viewers a whiteboard presentation narrated by Molina, whom Chapman calls the "brainchild" of these resources. Thoughtful, good-humored, and thoroughly knowledgeable, Molina leads viewers through the critical ideas and key foundations of each standard, with a review, examples, and the vocabulary that teachers and students need to be successful.

"We want our primary audience to be teachers but also wanted the videos to be useful for parents, who are helping their children with homework at night," said Chapman.

Ten Reasons Why Common Core Standards Require a Whole Teacher - Whole Child Education

Ten Reasons Why Common Core Standards Require a Whole Teacher - Whole Child Education | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

When teachers and parents hear the term Common Core State Standards, many have a tendency to think of the new standards as a simple upgrade. In fact, the standards represent an entirely new operating system.

This is good news for the whole child movement. The Common Core standards focus on an inquiry approach to education. Inquiry can't be done through direct instruction alone; it requires student cooperation, engagement, and persistence—all attributes drawn from a pool of social and emotional resources. Without addressing this aspect of human performance, the standards will fail.

Deb Gardner's insight:

I'm thinking of them as indispensable "soft skills" of CCSS.  They are:

  1. Foster a culture of care
  2. Move from classroom management to people management
  3. Redefine rigor
  4. Use project design methods
  5. Design projects that matter
  6. Grade 21st century skills
  7. Coach for performance
  8. Teach teamwork
  9. Grade inquiry
  10. Encourage innovation

Common Core Testers Unveil Proposed 'Read-Aloud' Accommodations

Common Core Testers Unveil Proposed 'Read-Aloud' Accommodations | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Two accommodations policies under consideration by a 23-state assessment consortium could narrow the pool of children that would qualify for assistance on those tests in some of those states.

The governing board of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, voted last week to put the two draft policies out for public feedback. Once final, they will be included in the larger "accommodations manual" that will guide development of the assessment that will be taken by students in 22 states and the District of Columbia in 2014-15. The full manual is slated for a vote to release it for public comment at the PARCC board's meeting in March.

Technology Requirements for Common-Core Tests Updated

Technology Requirements for Common-Core Tests Updated | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

You might recall that in April, the two consortia released an early, joint version of the tech specifications. Those were aimed at offering districts guidance in planning for new hardware purchases.

Since then, however, each consortium has issued its own, more detailed version of the tech specifications, which are intended to help technology directors figure out where their systems might need upgrading before the tests are first administered in the spring of 2015.

The "2.0 version" released by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, came out on Friday

Consortium Releases Technology Guidelines for Common Core Tests

Consortium Releases Technology Guidelines for Common Core Tests | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers said the guidance, unveiled late Friday afternoon, is meant to provide direction to states and districts on the extent to which current technology meets testing standards, or whether upgrades will be required.

The document offers both "minimum specifications," that would satisfy the consortium's tech guidelines at least through 2014-15, and "recommended" ones, which would be expected to meet the state group's standards through the 2018-19 school year.

Deb Gardner's insight:

Helpful information for students to plan ahead in planning for and procuring technology. In light of these testing requirements, what do teachers actually need to teach?
