Most teachers believe that the new standards promise better learning for their students, and an overwhelming majority of teachers say that their schools have already made significant progress toward implementing the standards, including relevant curriculum changes and professional development.

But findings from this survey also show that, for the most part, the heavy lifting of aligning curriculum and instruction to the rigor of the CCSS still lies ahead:

A tale of two transitions to Common Core education standards | The Center for Investigative Reporting | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

As Phillips, a veteran teacher of 17 years, spent the morning working on comprehension with one small group of readers after another, she never mentions the words “Common Core.” But much of the teaching technique she is using with the children is inspired by these new, ambitious national standards, adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia, which aim to encourage critical thinking and produce students who are more competitive globally.

California adopted these standards in 2010, and state officials hope to have them fully implemented by 2014-15. Field tests of new assessments pegged to the Common Core are expected to be given this spring. Meanwhile, it’s up to teachers like Phillips to take those lofty goals and make them an everyday reality.

So, for the past two years, Phillips, who has taught every grade from second to fifth, has spent a weekend a month plus some of her summer break getting extra training on how to implement the Common Core standards from experts provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District. In turn, she leads training sessions at Roscomare while road testing new ways of teaching in her own classroom.

Conversation ED- How to Implement the Common Core, and much, much more

This is most definitely true, to an extent.  The Common Core focuses on higher levels of critical thinking, better questioning in the classroom, and making students dig deeper into concepts.  Many teachers are doing this already; so this shift to the Common Core State Standards will not be as intense for some.  However, I invite you to look at the six shifts in the Common Core and evaluate yourself on how consistent you are in implementing this type of instruction in your classroom.

CCSS Implementation is a "Real Grind!" After speaking to a group of teachers in Indianapolis some months ago, one teacher approached me after the inservice and expressed concerns about how much time, energy and patience understanding and implementing CCSS was going to take.  "This is going to be a real grind!" she said.  Let's hope she's right.

One of the key aspects of a good school, district or diocesan-wide implementation plan is that it should be a grind.  A long, slow, methodical, painstaking grind.  Despite what you might read or hear, there's no easy fix.  No single textbook series, webinar, in-service experience, web site, or model lesson plan is going to get this done for us.  Sure, check out the Basal Alignment Project, Achieve the Core, and the host of other resources that provide insight about CCSS implementation.  Certainly these can be helpful!  However, you and your colleagues have to figure out CCSS for yourselves!  How does it work in your classroom, with your students, with your routines, and with your approach to unit and lesson planning?

If you think back to those times in your career when you've improved most as a teacher, isn't it because you've chosen to dig in, experiment, observe and discuss and collaborate with colleagues?  Be weary of those who claim that, for years, they have been teaching in a way that supports CCSS.  I'm sure these teachers are out there, but I tend to be skeptical.  Regardless of how successful you've been as a teacher, CCSS gives us lots of opportunities to take a look at our own teaching and assessment practices and make improvements.

Amy Coe Rodde and Lija McHugh of the Bridgespan Group recently authored a report that speaks to the importance of the CCSS grind.  The report, entitled Building the Missing Link Between the Common Core and Improved Learning, highlights the stories of leaders and teachers who embrace the idea that a successful CCSS implementation plan takes time.  The authors note that "the practices and experiences [of these people] provide a model for others determined to ensure that the Common Core becomes more than just 'a poster on the faculty room wall.'"  It's worth a read.

In the next post, I'll propose some suggestions for how administrators and teacher leadership teams might begin the effort toward successful CCSS implementation.

The Common Core, then, do not attempt to arbitrarily “raise the bar” for the sake of making school more difficult. They attempt to align minimum K–12 expectations with those of the colleges and universities who will be accepting our graduates to ensure that they actually master the content they are supposed to while they are in our public schools.

As 45 states across the country implement bold education reform in the form of world-class academic standards, we are hearing a lot of feedback from some of the individuals affected most by the Common Core initiative – America’s teachers.

The Winston Group conducted a survey of 900 K-12 public school teachers across 11 states to support the development of a communications strategy around the Common Core State Standards. The survey was conducted February 21-March 2, 2013 via telephone (cell phone and landline) as well as through an online panel in order to ensure adequate representation of teachers across demographic groups.

The eleven states surveyed include: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.

Despite the tireless marriage-wrecking efforts of Common Core opponents and their acolytes and funders, few states that initially pledged their troth to these rigorous new standards for English and math are in divorce mode. What’s far more fluid, unpredictable, and—frankly—worrying are the two elements of standards-based reform that make a vastly greater difference in the real world than standards themselves: implementation and assessment.
