Common Core Video Series: National PTA

Common Core Video Series: National PTA | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

This video series was developed through a partnership with the Hunt Institute as part of National PTA’s ongoing effort to provide accurate information about the Common Core State Standards and to assist PTA membership with developing grassroots advocacy skills.

The Common Core State Standard videos were designed to educate parents on the Common Core State Standards and empower them to support the transition at school and at home. The videos highlight three key principles:

We need clear, consistent and rigorous standards across the country to ensure all students—regardless of their zip code—graduate with the higher order thinking skills needed for college and careers. The standards reflect the relevant knowledge and skills that young people need to succeed in college and to build and maintain an American workforce that can compete in the global economy.National PTA’s goal is for parents to be knowledgeable about the standards and new assessments and to support them every step of the way as states transition to the standards.

Teaching Channel Playlist: Deeper Learning and CCSS | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

As Common Core assessments nip at our heels, it will be tempting to drill into the standards so deeply we lose our beacon of light. We must also remain grounded in the bigger picture of the Core, and our ultimate hopes for students. Through our new Deeper Learning series, you’ll see key strategies and ideas you can take away for tomorrow, but you’ll also see images of the end game up close. Over and over, these videos create imagery of students reasoning, taking ownership, having determination, and showing distinctive poise and pride in their demonstration of quality work.

Video Library | EngageNY

Video Library | EngageNY | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

The video library is an innovative and differentiated resource that brings the Common Core instructional shifts, teacher and leadership evaluation, and data driven instruction to life. The instructional videos capture teaching and evaluation along a developmental arc and tag for characteristics like grade level, subject area, Common Core Standards, instructional shifts and for 2013-2014, teacher and leader evaluation rubric indicators. Videos range in length from short 5 minute clips to longer views of lessons up to 40 minutes. Use these instructional videos to support your professional development and to push your thinking around what effective teaching looks like in practice as well as to identify growing edges of the teachers in these videos.

These instructional videos are possible thanks to the brave, enthusiastic, and supportive New York school districts, administrators, teachers, and students who believe in the power of video to drive professional learning around the Common Core. They've welcomed coaches and a video team into their schools and classrooms because they are excited to share their experiences about Common Core implementation.

Assessments of Deeper Learning | Alliance For Excellent Education

Assessments of Deeper Learning | Alliance For Excellent Education | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

The Common Core State Standards will require new assessments that measure students’ abilities to design and conduct investigations, analyze data, draw valid conclusions, and report findings—the kinds of deeper learning competencies necessary in the twenty-first century. But developing these new assessments poses challenges, particularly around funding. How can states and districts support the development and implementation of new assessments that might be more costly than current tests? What might make these assessments more affordable?

Deb Gardner's insight:

Includes link to recorded webinar (audio only) and presentation slides.

A Close Video Reading of the ELA Common Core

A Close Video Reading of the ELA Common Core | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

This video is nicely arranged with substantial content shared by some of the "big hitters" in the development of Common Core State Standards (David Coleman, Gene Wilhoit, Susan Pimentel, et al).

This would be a suitable video (at about 14 minutes) to ask teachers to view BEFORE coming to PD - think of it as "flipping the classroom" for teachers instead of students.

Structuring the Day: How ELA and Reading are Taught at a Middle School-Grade 8

8th Grade ELA and Reading teacher explains how her ELA and Reading classes are structured in her middle school to provide maximum time engaged in rigorous work.
Deb Gardner's insight:

The English Department Chair and ELA Middle School Teacher understand that reading and writing are two branches off the same tree and therefore have created a two hour ELA block. Students are reading to write, while at the same time writing about their reading.

Georgia has put together a series of videos explaining how they are restructuring schedules and creating creating new, integrated units with instruction and assessment strategies that support CCSS.

This video is just one in the series that can be found here.

Each video highlights one mathematics standard, runs between 10 and 20 minutes, and shows viewers a whiteboard presentation narrated by Molina, whom Chapman calls the "brainchild" of these resources. Thoughtful, good-humored, and thoroughly knowledgeable, Molina leads viewers through the critical ideas and key foundations of each standard, with a review, examples, and the vocabulary that teachers and students need to be successful.

"We want our primary audience to be teachers but also wanted the videos to be useful for parents, who are helping their children with homework at night," said Chapman.

This is a video and lesson resource project to assist teachers and principals around the nation. The video modules on this site exemplify the key shifts that the Common Core brings to classroom pedagogy.

The intro video on the home page is worth taking a look and focuses on some of the key takeaways of the CCSS:

-Think depth not breadth.

-Slow down in order to go faster.

-Take time to dig in to the standards themselves to understand the expectations - own them!

-The CCSS  reflect higher level thinking, problem solving and strong teaching pedagogy.
