International Test Scores Expose U.S. Education Problem

International Test Scores Expose U.S. Education Problem | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it
The U.S. performed above average on international standardized tests in elementary and middle school math, science and reading, according to reports released Tuesday. But experts said the rankings, along with similar exams that test students at later ages, show a fundamental problem in America's education system: students tend to perform worse as they age.

"When we start looking at our older students, we see less improvement over time," said Jack Buckley, who leads the U.S. Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics. That trend holds true across several exams.
Deb Gardner's insight:

What the assessment reveals: 1) Growth in learning slows down as US students progress through grade levels, 2) Students living in East Asian countries outperformed more than 60 other world education systems (and far outperform students in the US), 3) Finland is still numeral uno!

This is an interesting fact that students perform worst as they age.  I believe due to the saturation of social and world atributes, students through age lose focus on their own academic learning.  Something has to done in route to maitain or increase student achievement.

Tony Bennett Says Common Core in Jeopardy in Indiana

Tony Bennett Says Common Core in Jeopardy in Indiana | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

How does Bennett think Ritz pulled off what can fairly be described as a big upset? The Common Core State Standards plays a role. Bennett argued that Ritz—who is skeptical of the common core—used the standards to take away conservative voters who otherwise favored him.

Many Republicans are critical of the common core because they say it smacks of too much federal involvement. Bennett, a big champion of the common standards, also said Ritz's victory could jeopardize Indiana's leading role in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for Colleges and Careers, one of two state consortia working on assessments tied to the standards.

"I have some very serious concerns about the future of that program," he said of the testing consortia. And when it came to common standards, Bennett said, "She did a very good job of appealing to the strong conservative base who had problems with the common core. So that's another issue obviously."

Indiana and the Common Core: Tony Bennett got it right

Indiana and the Common Core: Tony Bennett got it right | CCSS News Curated by Core2Class | Scoop.it

Indiana's State Superintendent, Tony Bennett, supported Common Core Standards, said "no thanks" to federal Race to the Top money, limited teacher unions' collective bargaining, provided families with vouchers to offer choice of schools, and helped Indiana students make greater gains in academic achievement. This past year Dr. Bennett was named state "Education Reform Idol" by the Fordham Institute and is a candidate for re-election next week.

Fordham Institute's Chester Finn and Mike Petrilli write, "We work at a nonprofit organization and so by law cannot endorse Tony or urge anyone to vote for him. So let us simply say this: he's a swell guy whose service in his present role is a big plus for Indiana's children and for the cause of education reform in America."
