The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic | Core Competencies for Distance Educators | Scoop.it

Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy. Obviously, depending on the grade level  you teach, your students will have different abilities in each of the four areas, so your expectations and your teaching approach may differ quite noticeably from your colleagues. But the nagging question still remains for many teachers – what exactly is digital literacy?

The eight C's devised by Doug Belshaw are a neat framework to consider for use in thinking about digital literacy. There are others that are also useful and that is also useful. It will be interesting to note how this field is defined over time.

I would add: Trans-disciplinary thinking; systems thinking for sustainability. Most people can not see the forest through the trees so miss the larger connections of the impacts that action, goods & services have on both environmental systems and human systems.

Lisa Marie Blaschke's insight:

In addition to helping students acquire new knowledge, teachers today also need to guide students in developing the skills they need to become more self-determined and lifelong learners. These are competencies that can help teachers do just that.

Hier is ook in Nederland nog een wereld te winnen. Als de politiek zich nu eens wat minder hijgerig met onderwijs bezig zou houden en (goedopgeleide) docenten hun werk zou laten doen.

Our students need to be comfortable with the information technologies that are inextricably linked to the 21st century skills the work place requires, and teachers need to help pave the way.

VISUAL LITERACY

Demonstrate the ability to interpret, recognize, appreciate, and understand information presented through visible actions, objects and symbols, natural or man-made

I'd suggest a lot of the more innovative university programmes are already doing much of what is suggested here. One thing to emphasise is supporting students to use digital tools specifically for learning as they generally already know how to use these tools. In otherwords, while students may often be digitally competent, they are often less digitally literate in terms of learning processes. Also, what refer to PDAs - surely old tech?

Miep Carstensen's curator insight, December 1, 2013 11:14 PM

Sound advice for teachers to incorprate these core competencies in their teaching programmes.

Lisa Marie Blaschke's insight:

Interestingly, mastery of one's discipline isn't the top required skill to be innovative in the workforce -- and across disciplines. Topping the list is creativity, followed by thinking skills (cognition and meta-cognition) and ability to persuade and communicate. The article calls for new pedagogies within higher education. My nomination is for heutagogy.

Deeper Learning: Defining Twenty-First Century Literacy | Core Competencies for Distance Educators | Scoop.it

How about that last characteristic of a 21st-century learner, effective communicator? Being literate means one who is advanced at reading, writing, speaking, and listening. And, in all schools -- deeper learning driven or not -- literacy is a curriculum fundamental.

Lisa Marie Blaschke's insight:

Is enough of this being done in the classroom? I wish I could say this is happening in my kids' classrooms here in Germany. These literacies need to be taught much, much sooner.
