It's obvious that creativity is an essential part of being a remarkable writer. But when a results-oriented writer says "creative" and an image-oriented

This is an interesting splodge of data, investigating Facebook & Twitter trends in the Arab world. It comes courtesy of Khaled Al Ahmad aka @Shusmo (with design by Lama Zaitoon). As the article on Mashable says, "Social media has been often touted for the role it played in the popular uprisings that have spread across the Arab world since December 2010. Despite the buzz, you may be surprised that only 0.26% of the Egyptian population, 0.1% of the Tunisian population and 0.04% of the Syrian population are active on Twitter."

Wikipedia's stated goal to be a neutral fact-based encyclopedia has enabled it to accumulate an incredible amount of useful information. But crowdsourcing has its drawbacks, and students should tread carefully...

Exceptionally well-written blog on what it takes to be a top-notch blogger, courtesy of Marya at Writing Happiness. Explores consistency, passion, time-management, relationships (with other bloggers; not the wine, dancefloor and breeding kind) and persistency. Which brings me on to the following superb quote, also included therein: "Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” – Calvin Coolidge Superb stuff!
A nice little infographic that's (perhaps a little heavy on the words, but is still) a pretty and informative document.

"We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us."
An interesting article by Eric Friedenwald-Fishman for Stanford Social Innovation Review, a man who, it's safe to say, knows his marketing and communication onions (he's the creative director/president of Metropolitan Group (MG), a leading social marketing firm with offices in Chicago, Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, and Washington, DC; and co-author of Marketing That Matters, which has been translated into six languages). In this article he talks engagingly about the power of Personality, Parable and Passion (and five other P's) when telling your organisation's story. A few months ago, we had the pleasure of announcing the Best LinkedIn Company Pages of 2012. Since then, we’ve heard from a lot of you asking for tips on how
'They say an elephant never forgets. Well, you are not an elephant. Take notes, constantly. Save interesting thoughts, quotations, films, technologies…the medium doesn't matter, so long as it inspires you. When you're stumped, go to your notes like a wizard to his spellbook. Mash those thoughts together. Extend them in every direction until they meet.' And other great advice on beating the block...
Facebook's back on the gift-trail again, allowing users to link to gifts inspired by birthday reminders or friend's timelines or, I imagine, just because. This move follows on from their recent acquisition of Karma (for $80million, which sounds a lot but I guess really isn't that much for a lifetime of peace and serenity; presuming of course it was just the good stuff they bought). So will you be amongst the 'millions of people' Facebook would like to encourage to 'share moments together' via an easy-to-order dose of retail therapy?
A direct marketing success story: How a women’s retailer in the US – Chico’s – got customer win-back direct mail spot on. Warm, personal, and personalised content helped ensure that this direct mail shot hit its mark (instead of being 'forwarded' straight into the recycling bin). Comes via http://www.gianfagnamarketing.com and includes 6 lessons for a smart marketing strategy.

Swedish social media entrepreneur Erik Wachtmeister today announced the launch of a new social networking site targeting the "top 1%" of internet users, called Best of All Worlds. It would seem Erik thinks an 'invitation-only' social network for the world's elite is the way tomorrow's world will get its business done. Doesn't sound all that encouraging for entrepreneurs who've yet to make their mark...

More excellent insights from my new favourite person, Marya from Writing Happiness. She also offers a free ebook on How To Write Blog Content. Just pop along to her site, http://writinghappiness.com Enjoy.
'The social media gurus have finally crashed the Pinterest party. The age of innocence is over...' So says the effervescent Dan Perez. I don't pretend to know much about the past history of Pinterest, nor indeed its current machinations, and I haven't the foggiest about its future. But I think Dan does. If you're still undecided as to whether to read on, the article's thoughtfully sprinkled with splendid pictures (some of which involve kittens).
Capital letters? One word or two. Hyphens? ...Exactly how do you write that? These are the kinds of questions that make many a proud online copywriter scream as they attempt to write for the web and simultaneously navigate the slew of all-new words, phrases and terms that constantly spring into being. Beta or beta? Blog or weblog? Click through or clickthrough? But all these questions and more have been answered by those nice people at HubSpot in their exceptionally handy list of oft-used words and terms - and how they should be written. Enjoy.
The Art Of Storytelling In Business Communications And Public Relations... as told by Lou Hoffman of The Hoffman Agency (http://www.hoffman.com/) See how 'Conversational' slugs it out with 'Jargon'! Gasp as 'Anecdotal' slams 'Mundane'! Cheer as 'Texture' roundhouses 'Smooth' and sends it cartwheeling across the ring! It's Storytelling Versus Corporate Speak, folks. The fight of the 21st Century, and you've got ring-side seats...
This excellent list of hipster words and phrases comes courtesy of the lovely people at Mental_Floss magazine. More than a few are 'slated for crashville' but that'll just make it all the more fun trying to slip them into future conversation...
Utterly delicious images of vintage typewriters (alongside some intergalactic peach stones, a delicious pear paperweight and more). All courtesy of photographer Sam Hofman.
Cigarettes that do you good! These wonderful, pretty and informative vintage infographics (occasionally feat. dancing, axe-wielding deep sea divers) hail from a Max Cigarette card series from 1935-38. It's also interesting to note that back in the late 1930s folk had already spotted that: 'The supplies of mineral oil which yield petrol are rapidly becoming exhausted...'
