Don't let Paris attacks stop COP21 climate change deal, Obama urges

Don't let Paris attacks stop COP21 climate change deal, Obama urges | Climate Agreement News | Scoop.it

Barack Obama has moved to ensure that the Paris attacks do not sabotage a crucial climate change summit in the city next week, urging his fellow leaders to attend and strike a new deal on global warming.

Climate Action's insight:

There is hope that the horrific Paris attacks will help to bring the world together to create a climate change agreement. The Sustainable Innovation Forum's speaker, Andrew Steer, is mentioned, saying,  "...There is a degree of solidarity internationally over this issue, that is not exactly unprecedented, but since 9/11, we probably haven’t seen anything quite like that. If anything, it stiffens the spine in terms of determination to really solve what is the greatest collective action problem in history.”

India says Paris climate deal won't affect plans to double coal output | Climate Agreement News | Scoop.it
Indian official says while country has huge plans for solar, there are limitations to clean energy and coal will remain most efficient energy source for decades
Climate Action's insight:

“The environment is non-negotiable and we are extremely careful about it,” Anil Swarup, the top bureaucrat in the coal ministry, told Reuters. “(But) our dependence on coal will continue. There are no other alternatives available.” While India has plans to add 30 times more solar-powered generation capacity by 2022, there were limitations to clean energy and coal would remain the most efficient energy source for decades, he said.

Hopefully India will be able to step away from coal to renewables, such as solar, sooner rather than later.
