Liam Michelsohn's curator insight, December 11, 2013 1:12 PM

The mega city revlution has started and accroing to stastics its only to get more popular. The creattion of these mega cities has trasformed where people want to live, while also helping to bring nations stability though creation on these mega cities. It was said that with in 30 years more than 60% of the population will live in cities. Theses megacities are desirable, they help to stablize a country and have almost doubbled in number since the 1990's. It will be intereesting to see how the effects of megacites play out on the eniorment and ecnomny in the futre though.

Steven Flis's curator insight, December 17, 2013 4:52 AM

Cities are attractive places to live. They host local entertainment, culture and are very lively. But with the increasing number of city dewellers in years to come i can see people easily forgetting their roots. This can also become a massive enviromental problems if citys start to expolde in numbers but the cities resources remain stagnet. Imagine a city like LA doubling in numbers the water supply in surrounding areas would be erraticacted.

Jess Deady's curator insight, May 4, 9:23 PM

Urbanization is the now. It is the up and coming world. That statistic is easily going to be correct in 2030. None the less, the world is conforming to its popular places. Where do you go when you need to shop, or to have a meeting? The city of course. Cities will take over the world and one day, no one will live in rural areas because there might not be any to even live in.

Common sense tells us that growing biofuels on arable land for fuel can, at the most, only provide us with a small percentage of so-called renewable fuel.   It takes up huge acreage of good land for food; often from deforestation; it is constantly being harvested, not allowing natural biodiversity to re-establish itself; it requires water; pesticides, chemicals, fertilizers; it is energy intensive to process and transport; and it carries nice, hefty subsidies (as does wind) for investment and bottom-line.   But it is not cost-effective when all is taken into account and t is dependent upon the weather and climate change is coming in fast. So let's stop with the public relations spin and tell it like it is.  It is a boondoggle that will fade as the subsidies are withdrawn.

Sea change - The Loss of Ocean Species is Staggering | Coordenadas | Scoop.it

-Financial Times

Humans have gained unprecedented supremacy over the seas in a short space of time, thanks to potent technological advances such as satellite tracking devices and engines so formidable they can drag nets big enough to engulf a cathedral. Add in the impact of pollution, from the likes of fertiliser run-off or discarded plastic, and the oceans have changed more in the past 30 years than in all of human history.

In most places, the oceans have lost more than 75 per cent of their “megafauna” – large creatures such as whales, sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles. Numbers of some species – oceanic whitetip sharks; American sawfish – are down by as much as 99 per cent. For every 20 leatherback turtles in the Pacific 50 years ago, only one remains...http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/9601c144-9dcd-11e1-838c-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1vqzpHIBt

Coal, steel, gold, iron, copper, aluminum and oil are all incredibly important commodities.  Agricultural products such as rice, cotton, corn, wheat and coffee all travel far beyond their area of origin.   Where do these resources come from?  How are they produced?  This gallery of 77 pictures is a fantastic tour of the resources that are key cogs in the global economy.

How are satellite images different from photographs? | Coordenadas | Scoop.it

"Satellites acquire images in black and white, so how is it possible to create the beautiful color images that we see on television, in magazines, and on the internet? Computers provide us with the answer.

Images created using different bands (or wavelengths) have different contrast (light and dark areas). Computers make it possible to assign 'false color' to these black and white images. The three primary colors of light are red, green, and blue. Computer screens can display an image in three different bands at a time, by using a different primary color for each band. When we combine these three images we get a 'false color image.'

Guide to Earth Explorer for Landsat 8

Guide to Earth Explorer for Landsat 8 | Coordenadas | Scoop.it

The Landsat Data Continuity Mission is now Landsat 8, and that means images are now public (woohoo!). NASA handed control of the satellite to the USGS earlier this year (May 30, 2013), and calibrated imagery is available through the Earth Explorer. Unfortunately, the Earth Explorer interface is a bit of a pain, so I’ve put together a guide to make it easier.

If you have been afraid to download remotely sensed images, this is a very-user friendly, step-by-step guide on how to download Landsat 8 data (and many other geospatial datasets)  using Earth Explorer from USGS.

Looks like a cool tool for mapping activities.

Chris Cividino's curator insight, November 8, 2013 12:09 AM

The Landsat program is an essential tool for geographers when they are studying GIS. Without this data, Google Earth and many of the other mapping programs we love so much would not be possible.

Earlier this summer the T3G participants had an informal lightning talk session with many people sharing their favorite educational, geospatial or professional development tools.  I was amazed as some of the incredible projects these fantastic educator are involved with and I didn’t have time to properly credit all the speakers, but this was the best I could do to capture some incredible projects.  Below are some of the links:

UNHCR has been attempting to count the world's refugees since it was created. If you want to find out which years resulted in the worst displacement, which were the biggest countries of origin and which were the biggest countries of asylum, use the interactive map.

This interactive on refugees is especially timely, given that the Syrian civil war has created refugee situations in many of the neighboring countries.  One of my favorite elements of the Guardian's interactive is that they provide the raw data, so students can create their own maps with the same high quality data.  Equally important, this interactive shows the regional power bases of all the various factions of the Syrian rebellion that is seeking to overthrow the Assad regime.  The political conflict has huge demographic implications.

Immigration is a big problem, we have people coming into the United States which is a more developed country looking for jobs and homes but eventually our nation will not have enough resources to provide everyone what they need.

Bella The Non-Vampire's curator insight, September 10, 9:59 AM

Migration is something that has been happening for years. Today there are many migrants in America. In fact migrants choose
America to migrate to. The many migrants here in America is from Mexico. There are many reasons for migrating. Many people migrate to avoid war and environmental disasters. Also, many people migrate for job opportunities and economic purposes. I.C.

Sierra_Mcswagger's curator insight, September 10, 10:02 AM

This video is primarily talking on the widely known topic of migration. 3 percent of the worlds population is living away from there place of birth. The push of migration from places include poverty, war, and environmental disasters. The migration pull in some places are because of  economic opportunity, and political freedom. Migration is increasing, and is thought of as a bad thing.(s.s.)
