World Atlas is an educational resource for world maps, atlases, and in-depth geography information. Teachers and students: free maps of Europe, USA, Canada, Florida, Caribbean Islands and much more. This World Atlas, in addition to have many maps at a variety of scales as is very common these days, has the added feature of embedding facts and other informative features based on your scale and regional context. Students can explore this at their own pace to learn about what every region of the world that interests them the most.

This is a fabulous collection of geospatial resources to “explore the world, one map at a time.” There are high-resolution digital wall maps, animated fly-over maps, thematic census data maps, aerial photography and other mapping tools. The focus of many of these resources is the Western portion of the United States, but there are many on the national scale as well (see the ‘Electronic Map Library’ and select ‘Unites States Atlas’ for census maps on dozens of variables).

"Satellites acquire images in black and white, so how is it possible to create the beautiful color images that we see on television, in magazines, and on the internet? Computers provide us with the answer.
Images created using different bands (or wavelengths) have different contrast (light and dark areas). Computers make it possible to assign 'false color' to these black and white images. The three primary colors of light are red, green, and blue. Computer screens can display an image in three different bands at a time, by using a different primary color for each band. When we combine these three images we get a 'false color image.'

ESRI is the world leader in GIS (geographic information system) technology. This site features free GIS software, online mapping, online training, demos, data, software and service information, user scripts, and more. This learning module includes activities that analyze water (oceans, rivers, watersheds, wetlands, etc.) within an explicitly spatial context. As the author of the module, Joseph Kerski states: "Water is a spatial subject: It easily moves among its solid, liquid, or gas phases on our planet. It flows through oceans, rivers, wetlands, glaciers, and through the hydrologic cycle at different rates. Thus, the geographic perspective and GIS are useful to understanding water from local to global scales. These activity use ArcGIS Online, a Web-based Geographic Information System (GIS). No previous experience with GIS is necessary."

This website houses the past research, images and future missions of the European Space Agency. The greatest scientific knowledge we have gained through the space program is actually about our home planet. Space-age technologies literally give geographers a chance to step back and put the Earth in better perspective. Images from this site are fantastic resource use to teach the thematic content, but also it is a great resource to show the relevance of geospatial technologies. Bridgewater State is the home of SEMAGNET, the Southeast division of the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance (housed at Clark University). Bridgewater State is also home to Project Earthview (I've never been so jealous of a globe before). This inflatable, hand-painted globe in a fantastic teaching resource. You can even enter the globe with a group under 20 and explore the Earth from the inside out. The link is to the Earthview blog, with provides information of the project to take this globe to local schools, and other geographic resources.
