Ontem, o «Bing Maps» anunciou a conclusão do seu mapeamento ambicioso: Global Ortho Project para os EUA e Europa Ocidental. Poderemos ver os EUA e Europa Ocidental numa resolução de 30cm (1pé) no terreno equivalente a 1pixel no ecran. Este esforço estabelece um novo padrão nas imagens online de fotografias aéreas. Adapted from the book by Professor Susan Hanson... This is an excellent review/summary of an edited volume that shows the value of geographic thought and its importance in the modern world. This review conveniently gives a one paragraph synopsis of each chapter. It does not need to be read chronologically, so you can pick and choose what you find relevant to your course. The top 10 are (in order of inclusion in the book): the Idea of the Map, the Weather Map, GIS, Human Adjustment, Water Budget Climatology, Human Transformation of the Earth, Spatial Organization and Interdependence, Central Place Theory, Megalopolis and Sense of Place.

"Satellites acquire images in black and white, so how is it possible to create the beautiful color images that we see on television, in magazines, and on the internet? Computers provide us with the answer.
Images created using different bands (or wavelengths) have different contrast (light and dark areas). Computers make it possible to assign 'false color' to these black and white images. The three primary colors of light are red, green, and blue. Computer screens can display an image in three different bands at a time, by using a different primary color for each band. When we combine these three images we get a 'false color image.'

After cutting a destructive path through the Caribbean, Hurricane Sandy caused extensive damage along the East Coast this week. While the damage wasn't as bad as many feared it could have been, place and spatial context are especially important in assessing the impacts of a natural disaster. This is a excellent collection of the many devastating images as a result of Hurricane Sandy. To see some more local images, Rhode Island Department of Transportation put this collection together.

Há tantas redes perdidas no mar, gaiolas, bóias e bidões de gasóleo... Em 2011 a quantidade de resíduos capturados acidentalmente (resíduos apahados em redes depois de um dia comum de pesca) foi tal que, em França, o sector de reciclagem de plásticos pagou no ano passado 375€ por tonelada de recolha de plástico, tendo recebido 1000 toneladas (na lota portuguesa paga-se em média 1500 euros por tonelada de pescado com escamas e guelras). O projecto-piloto "European Waste Free Oceans Project" paga aos pescadores para retirarem resíduos de plástico do mar nas suas horas vagas. Em Nice, França, criou-se uma rede de pesca inventada de propósito para o efeito.

Bridgewater State is the home of SEMAGNET, the Southeast division of the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance (housed at Clark University). Bridgewater State is also home to Project Earthview (I've never been so jealous of a globe before). This inflatable, hand-painted globe in a fantastic teaching resource. You can even enter the globe with a group under 20 and explore the Earth from the inside out. The link is to the Earthview blog, with provides information of the project to take this globe to local schools, and other geographic resources. UPDATE: This event was televised by WGGB with the clip now online.
