The best freeware corpus analysis program for translators?

The best freeware corpus analysis program for translators? | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Michael Wilkinson: "not all translators – and especially student translators – are prepared to invest in […] software, especially if they are uncertain whether they will be using it on a large scale. One solution is to turn to a freeware program such as AntConc.

The first version of AntConc was released in 2002 by Laurence Anthony. It was a simple concordance program, but since then it has undergone continuous improvement and development. The most recent “stable-release” version at the time of writing (February 2012) is AntConc 3.2.4(Anthony, 2011).

AntConc can run on Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems, but whereas WordSmith requires additional software to run on systems other than Windows, AntConc runs on all three systems without additional software. In addition, AntConc is able to process texts in almost any language in the world, including Asian languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Moreover AntConc can process both UTF-8 and all legacy encodings on different systems, so it should be able to process texts saved in the operating system default encoding on all systems.

Like WordSmith, AntConc comprises, in addition to the concordancer, various other features, such as a tool for generating word-lists as well as a keyword tool that can locate and identify words that occur with an unusually high (or low) frequency in a corpus when it is compared with a reference corpus. However in the following I shall focus mainly on how well the concordancer serves the needs of the translator.

Creating Interactive Web-based Exercises in Hot Potatoes (TESL-EJ review)

Creating Interactive Web-based Exercises in Hot Potatoes (TESL-EJ review) | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"Hot Potatoes is a great freeware program for language teachers to create or upload exercises on their personal websites, class group sites, or on the password-protected Hotpotatoes.net. Creating exercises for learners gives them space to repeatedly practise the target language. Students may also engage in the process of creating the exercises themselves, then sharing their work on a class group site for others to access. Previous studies point to the need for learners to be provided with opportunities for language input, making language salient, and focusing on form (Chapelle, 2001; Ellis, 2005). Having students create exercises may allow them to both learn the concepts and practise their language skills through the creation of the exercise (Erben, Ban, & Castaneda, 2009)."

Utiles pour encourager les élèves à écrire et créer des histoires.

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, March 23, 2014 12:49 PM

Using comic strips is one powerful way to get students excited and motivated about the writing act. Students love to interact with visuals and tools such as the ones listed below will empower them to do just that. Using these comic strip generators , students will get  to engage in conversations using cartoonic characters and build stories and share their works with each other.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, March 28, 2014 7:45 PM

I like these ideas! Teaching comic strip writing can be lots of fun!

term.ly, crafting words. An online dictionary, thesaurus.

"term.ly is a way to explore the English language. It is a semantic reference. A dictionary. A thesaurus. A reference tool. Maybe more. Maybe less.

term.ly provides concise definitions and goes beyond standard thesauri by providing related words that scale the hierarchy of language, allowing you to browse to more and less specific terms, and through relationships like 'member of', 'parts', 'similar to', etc.

Web Tools for Teachers by Type - Tim Wilhelmus' LiveBinder

Web Tools for Teachers by Type - Tim Wilhelmus' LiveBinder | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Tim Wilhelmus (Indiana educator and self-described learning sherpa) has this intimidatingly comprehensive list of tools for teachers, in categories ranging from video and audio editing through digital storytelling, to curation tools to name but a few.

It would be a nice place to start for language teacher training: you could assign groups to different rubics and have them compare the tools in the categories, design teaching materials and perhaps decide which work best.
