How Wikis Can Help Schools Organize Their Content

How Wikis Can Help Schools Organize Their Content | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"Students and teachers are embracing web 2.0 technologies with fervour but administrators are not, even though these remarkable tools can provide much needed cost-saving capabilities. This phenomenon is understandable, because older office tools, an already overburdened staff, and the reluctance to change the way of doing things all discourage jumping into untested waters. However, it is clear that administrative wikis can provide school administrations with radically improved documentation processes. In fact, they can begin to make schools the very platforms that students and teachers need to succeed in their technical endeavours. Why not reinvent schools as technology centres? After all, they are already theatres, restaurants, sports complexes, and more. The road starts with the administrative wiki."

Educational Technology Guy: Google Spreadsheets adds Discussions for easier collaboration

Educational Technology Guy: Google Spreadsheets adds Discussions for easier collaboration | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Google Spreadsheets, Google's online, collaborative spreadsheet system in Google Drive has just added an awesome feature - discussions. This feature is already in Documents and Presentations.
It allows you, and the other users of a spreadsheet, to add comments, which can be replied to, to any cell on a sheet. You can even +1 someone to add them to the discussion and send them a notification via email. Another cool feature is that they can reply to the comment directly from their inbox.
This is another great feature that makes Drive and Spreadsheets even more useful.

Free Technology for Teachers: Week in Review - Everyone Back to School! | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Judging by the massive spike in traffic to the blog this week, I think it's safe to say that almost everyone is back into their school year routines. Whether it's your first year or thirty-first year in education, I hope your year is off to a great start. Speaking of back to school, this weekend I'm spending some time having a mini-reunion of sorts with friends from my days at the University of Maine at Farmington. I hope that all of you have equally fun plans for the weekend.

Blogging About The Web 2.0 Connected Classroom: How Things Changed With @Evernote

Blogging About The Web 2.0 Connected Classroom: How Things Changed With @Evernote | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

I'll admit it.

I have to be one of the most unorganized people on the planet. I have notebooks in just about every bag I carry. Multiple calendars and I still miss appointments. Slips of papers as reminders with some string of illegible thoughts on them, that, when I find them, I don't have a clue what I was thinking when I wrote them.

I have more than 10 different types of projects going on at anyone time. A book, book chapters for others, keynotes to write, presentations to prepare, consulting, product review, and on and on and on. Not to mention my projects with my district.

Organization isn't really in my vocabulary.

Well, let me say, it wasn't in my vocabulary.

But it is now, thanks to Evernote.

Can Social Media Change a School? | Engaging Educators

Can Social Media Change a School? | Engaging Educators | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

I’ve written previously about my new position as an instructional coach at our school. The roles and responsibilities of this job are pretty much what you would expect: meeting with teachers, observing teachers, modeling lessons, etc. But I’m taking on a little extra as a side project in addition to all that…I want to be my school’s social media ambassador as well.

What’s a social media ambassador? Glad you asked. It’s the person who tries to engage the school community in new ways, especially parents and families, via social media. In short, I want families to be able to use social media as a sort of window into the school, allowing them to have more insight and information about what’s happening with their children while they’re here. Thanks to social media and snazzy gadgets like smart phones and tablets, though, it can be a window that they can peer through from anywhere at anytime.

Six Google Chrome extensions you should think about using

"Google does a great job of making those extensions easy to find and manage. There are also other plug-ins that I use several times a day. Here's a list of what I've found to be the most useful. I'm not going to bother writing my own summaries most of these extensions since their inclusion on the list amounts to my "endorsement" or them anyway."

Education Rethink: 10 Differences Between Teaching and Coaching

Education Rethink: 10 Differences Between Teaching and Coaching | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

I believe in the power of the coaching model. This afternoon, I will have an amazing grammar guru in my class modeling a lesson. I will engage in a dialogue with her. With her guidance, I will grow in one of my weakest areas of teaching. So, when I mention these differences, I want to be clear that I don't believe that coaching is better or worse than teaching. However, I do believe that they are very different from one another. Here are a few differences I've experienced:
