How digital culture is rewiring our brains

How digital culture is rewiring our brains | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Our brains are superlatively evolved to adapt to our environment: a process known as neuroplasticity. The connections between our brain cells will be shaped, strengthened and refined by our individual experiences. It is this personalisation of the physical brain, driven by unique interactions with the external world, that arguably constitutes the biological basis of each mind, so what will happen to that mind if the external world changes in unprecedented ways, for example, with an all-pervasive digital technology?

50 Indispensable EdTech Tools for 2012 - OnlineDegrees.org | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Technology and education are pretty intertwined these days and nearly every teacher has a few favorite tech tools that make doing his or her job and connecting with students a little bit easier and more fun for all involved. Yet as with anything related to technology, new tools are hitting the market constantly and older ones rising to prominence, broadening their scope, or just adding new features that make them better matches for education, which can make it hard to keep up with the newest and most useful tools even for the most tech-savvy teachers. Here, we’ve compiled a list of some of the tech tools, including some that are becoming increasingly popular and widely used, that should be part of any teacher’s tech tool arsenal this year, whether for their own personal use or as educational aids in the classroom.

Teachers Easy Guide to Social Learning

Teachers Easy Guide to Social Learning | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Bandura has set the floor for a new conception of learning as a social process where there is interaction and mindful observation as opposed to the mechanistic view of learning advocated by behaviourism. When Bandura started formulating his Social Learning Theory, there was nothing called web 2.0 tools or online social media and now that there is an abundance of such tools, social learning has even acquired a new dimension and is widely expanded to engulf many other forms of learning including e-learning, distance-learning, peer-to-peer learning, to mention but a few.

The Nerdy Teacher: Classroom Mismanagement

The Nerdy Teacher: Classroom Mismanagement | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"Never let them see you smile the first week of school. After that, you can ease up. It's easier to be tough and lighten up than be nice and lay down the law." This is one of the first pieces of advice I remember about being an educator and dealing with classroom management.

Classroom Mismanagement seems like a better term to describe what I was told. Even at the time, I thought it was weird, but, what did I know. I was just a new teacher struggling to keep my head above water. I'm not sure any teacher knows what they are doing with classroom management during that first year. All of the books in the world cannot prepare anyone for becoming the leader in the classroom of 30 teenagers for 48 minutes 5 times a day. I really want to share the advice I wish I had been given to all of you out there stressing about school starting and classroom management.

WizIQ is a platform for creating virtual classrooms and teaching online. I used the platform back in May to teach a coure with Angela Maiers and Chris Dawson. After getting familiar with all of the WizIQ features, I found it to be a good platform for teaching. I could easily toggle between showing my screen, showing my slides, and using my webcam. The built-in chatroom made it easy to get an active back-channel going.
