Resources on e-portfolios

Resources on e-portfolios | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, June 15, 11:33 AM

In education, a ‘portfolio’ refers to a personal collection of information describing, documenting and recording a person’s achievements and learning. Portfolios are used for many different purposes such as a tool for evaluating leaning, for accreditation of prior experience, for continuing professional development, to assist a job application, or for a certification of competences acquired through a course or from work experience . An educational portfolio is mainly used to encourage personal reflection and involves the exchange of ideas and feedback. Many people have already used some kind of portfolio. Most of them have built a portfolio to collect evidence required to get certificates or to show what they have learned in a concrete situation or training. The development of information and learning technologies has led to the development of digital portfolios or electronic portfolios, commonly referred as e-Portfolios

Oxford English Dictionary breaks own rule, lists 'tweet' | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Tweeting has become so popular that the Oxford English Dictionary broke one of its own rules to add 'tweet' to its lexicon. The addition stands out because it breaks an Oxford English Dictionary rule that a word needs to be in use for 10 years to be considered for inclusion. Since the Twitter social network just turned seven in March, the word aficionados broke their own rule by three years.

10 Tips To Effectively Use Social Media In Formal Learning

10 Tips To Effectively Use Social Media In Formal Learning | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it

By Christopher Pappas

"Social media are getting quite popular in eLearning, as well as in traditional classrooms andworkshops. The advantages are many and instructors cannot afford to ignore them: multiple-level interaction, reduce or elimination of classroom time, boost participation and collaboration, new job opportunities, opportunities for the development of online communities consisting of people with common training experiences, and so many more. And these are only few of the reasons why members of the learning community hop on board the social media train.

"So, let’s see how we can increase the effectiveness and longevity of formal learning, stimulate the engagement of learners, and enhance the social aspects of learning through the use of social media."

History of the English Language

History of the English Language | TEFL & Ed Tech | Scoop.it
A short history of the origins and development of the English language, from Old English to Modern English.

Old English (450-1100 AD)

Part of Beowulf, a poem written in Old English.

The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Nevertheless, about half of the most commonly used words in Modern English have Old English roots. The words be,strong and water, for example, derive from Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100.
