More and more in recent years, we've started referring to the kids in our classes as "learners" rather than "students." It began unintentionally but became more and more frequent. We gradually realized that the relationship between learner and educator is not always the same as between student and teacher.

Do you think of the children in your class as learners or students? Do you think of yourself as a teacher or an educator? And how do you define these words: learner, student, teacher, educator. This post explores how the word learner differs from the word student. One statement in the post "The word "learner" suggests an open-mindedness and a self-initiation. The word "student," however, implies a hierarchy. It defines a status, where one is the instructor and the other is the pupil."

If we view our classroom as individuals whom are learners then what is the role of the educator? The five ideas listed below are explored:

* Expertise
* Clearly delineated goals

* Mentorship

* Feedback

* Deftness with necessary tools

The first post in this series (of two) explored '5 Things Students Expect from their Teacher'  was scooped here). This post continues the dialogue and may provide you with some new insights into how you view yourself in your classroom this year...food for though.

Blended learning means offering a combination of face-to-face and online learning opportunities to learners. Blending these learning opportunities can contribute to personalizing learning. However, blended learning is not the only approach that personalizes learning. Personalizing learning starts with the learner. This means that learners have a stake in their learning by taking responsibility for their learning. When they own and drive their learning, they are more motivated to want to learn. In a learning environment that starts with the learner, teacher and learner roles change.


The research at the Students at the Center (studentsatthecenter.org) wrote nine reports on student-centered learning. Eric Toshalls, Ed.D., and Michael Nakkula, Ed.D. in one report, wrote the research on “Learning Theory: Motivation, Engagement and Student Voice” that described:


The Trifecta of Student Centered Learning

Motivation - Without motivation, there is no push to learn
Engagement - Without engagement, there is no way to learn
Voice - Without voice, there is no authenticity in learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Personalized learning as described in the research at Brown is built on the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) that is based upon decades of brain-research and neuroscience of individual differences, human variability and on how we learn. UDL is often thought about how it relates to special education, but to dispel that myth, the UDL principles is about how we understand how every learner learns.

Cartoons are a very interesting and powerful way to teach and especially for learners when the creator of the cartoons knows how to use them on an efficient way...


Gust MEES: e.g.: create cartoons on a "dialogue way" so you can display the questions your learners asked you and you give the answers also as the "master avatar" in your cartoons, visually learning... As people don't have anymore that much time to learn and are stressed, cartoons are THAT way to teach... Time saving, but efficient ;)
