The WizDish™ locomotion platform is an exercise device that allows a user to perform a walk simulation on the spot.  It provides the functionality of an 'omni-directional' treadmill' but without moving parts.  Such devices allow a single user to walk and turn in any direction without going anywhere.  This capability is particularly useful for full body immersion within virtual environments.

The sense of immersion, referred to as virtual presence, is significantly enhanced by physical movement.  Walking is a fundamental activity that not only provides a means of navigation but also crucial feedback that the human brain combines with audible and visual cues to comprehend 3D spaces.  A medical phenomenon known as proprioception, which is a combination of your kinaesthetic and vestibular senses, provides information to the brain about the position of our limbs and the extent to which we exert them.  From this we can deduce where we are, how far we have moved, where that is relative to a previous location and which direction we are facing.

The design avoids using moving parts, not just because it’s good engineering practice, but because users find moving platforms and wheeled footwear unsettling in this type of scenario.  The ability to maintain the entire foot sole in contact with a static platform keeps the user feeling in control and prevents the sensation of losing balance.

 

The WizDish platform is a composite construction of high performance polymers.  The WizShoes™ are a unique design of skate specially created for this purpose.

At the centre of this article there is truth, which is that our children need "new" skills and new ways of developing and using the "old" ones. However, I think there is room for them all, if the curriculum is formulated the right way. Inquiry-based learning, letting the kids ask a question and then search for the answer using a number of resources, is definitely the way to go. Personally I think there will ALWAYS be a place for being able to do maths the old fashioned way, so you understand how it works,  but there is also a time to let the technology take you further, to increase that understanding. Room for both.

"Racetrack Playa" sounds like the screenname of an online teenager you're competing against in Need for Speed, but scientists recognize it as the name of a dried-up lake in Death Valley. For a century, scientific minds have been puzzled by a well-documented, poorly-understood phenomenon occuring at Racetrack Playa: Enormous stones, some up to 700 pounds, appear to have somehow moved themselves across the lakebed floor in random patterns, leaving a furrowed trail behind them.

 

No one had ever seen these "sailing stones" move, but many photographed the end result. The original thought was that the lakebed forms a thin sheet of ice on it, and that the wind then blows the rocks across it; but that theory was discounted after researchers calculated it would take wind speeds of hundreds of miles per hour to move the rocks, while the wind at the Racetrack maxes out around 90 m.p.h. And if you're wondering why they don't just strap a GoPro camera onto a rock to see what's going on, scientists returning to the site over the years have calculated that the rocks move for short periods of time, just once every three years. That's a bit longer than your battery's likely to last.

 

However, a fortunate collision between two of these magic rocks provided planetary scientist Ralph Lorenz with an interesting discovery:

 

 

Lorenz, studying the trails left by the stones, observed that one rock had collided against another and been deflected. "There was a rock trail and it looked like it hit another rock and bounced, but the trail didn't go all the way up to other the rock, like it was repelled somehow," Lorenz told Smithsonian Magazine. In other words, there was some kind of force-field-like barrier around each rock that prevented total contact.

Wearable is bringing us all closer together, and an experimental device embraces this notion by allowing you to touch a friend remotely.

One of the new metrics of dating compatibility unique to our age is how frequently you do (or do not) text your partner during the day. This virtual form of contact has replaced what was once a phone call, and before that a physical meeting. But now that technology has moved into the wearable phase, a new idea has emerged that takes the notion of virtual contact quite literally. 

Created by Poland-based design studio Pangenerator, the Tactilu is a wrist device that allows wearers to communicate remotely through the sense of touch. Powered by an Arduino Pro mini microcontroller and a custom pcb with a Bluetooth module, the experimental device allows to wearers to virtually touch each other through haptic feedback via an Internet connection or Bluetooth no matter where they are in the world. 

Although the current design is already pretty futuristic, the next generation of the haptic feedback device will be much slimmer, thus making it a bit more palatable for potential mainstream consumers. You can see the Tactilu in action in the video below.

As researchers work on these model systems of neural networks, they contribute to our understanding of our brains - how information is gathered (sensed), stored (memory), accessed and employed (thought).

Providing the pros and cons of game-based-learning, they portray gaming in a positive light. The value of gaming is stated throughout, pinpointing engagement factors and citing statistics to back up their claims. As an avid gamer myself, I don't need stats to prove anything. I know how addicting they can be. If kids can learn when they don't even realize they're learning, it is referred to as "hidden learning". That's the key. If games like Portal  can be played without kids thinkng they're educational games, then that's good news for parents and educators alike. The fact of the matter is Portal is a very challenging puzzle game that requires careful planning and attention to move up levels.
