Life of an Educator: 5 ways to gauge student engagement: #edchat

Life of an Educator: 5 ways to gauge student engagement: #edchat | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
My point is simple... student engagement and the gauging of student engagement really aren't as easy or straightforward as some would think.

Also worth noting... I believe most of our kids are truly engaged at most times during the day. The question is... are they engaged in what we are wanting them to be engaged in...

Having said all that, here are 5 ways I feel pretty confident about in terms of knowing if your students are truly cognitively engaged in the learning occurring in your class.

Vocabulary Is Comprehension

Vocabulary Is Comprehension | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
The day before an Informal Reading Inventory (IRI), I always spend a class period getting to know the student. This provides me with insights that support my questions and decisions during the assessment, but it also helps students to relax as we learn about one another. During our conversation, Diego, a seventh grader, told me that he “hates” reading and never reads outside of school. He looked away from me when he muttered, “I’m going to fail this year. I can’t do the work.”

5 Ways to Help Students Affected by Generational Poverty

5 Ways to Help Students Affected by Generational Poverty | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
I work with students who are affected by generational poverty on a daily basis. I see many things. I see students whose shoes are held together by electrical tape. I see students who have perfect attendance because the only meals they receive are through the public school's cafeteria. I see pictures that students draw of their "pet rats" that live in their house. One thing I do not see a lot of is help for the educators trying to make a difference in these students' lives.

Joy is a Basic Skill in Secondary Reading

Joy is a Basic Skill in Secondary Reading | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
... [P]rograms that focus on teaching middle and high school students struggling in reading in classes of 12 to 20, emphasizing meta-cognitive strategies, phonics, fluency, and/or training for teachers in what they were already doing, show few impacts on learning. Most of the studies provided daily, extra reading classes to help struggling readers build their skills, while the control group got band or art. They should have stayed in band or art.

The Modern Educator – part one

The Modern Educator – part one | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
As noted in some of my tweets recently I am undertaking some work with Independent Thinking on the Isle of Man this week. It’s a really exciting project.

Blogstitute 2016: Getting Started with Close Writing - The Stenhouse Blog | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
I love coaching in classrooms during writing workshop. I love to watch students take ideas from their heads and magically transfer them to paper. I love listening to the talk that floats above the flurry of writing. It was from these opportunities that I noticed the varying range of connectedness students had to their writing. The most successful writers seemed to be very connected to their written work, while those who struggled more were often quite disconnected. This translated into some students frequently rereading and revisiting their writing and others who saw writing as a one-way process: get it down and done.
