How To Kill Learner Curiosity In 12 Easy Steps.

Killing a learner’s natural curiosity doesn’t happen overnight. It can take as long as 12 years, and in some rare cases even that isn’t long enough.

Learning environments focused on standards, assessment, and compliance allow for the implementation of research-based strategies in pursuit of streams of data to prove that learning is happening. Curiosity is nice, but it’s a monumental challenge to measure.

Don’t Leave Learning Up to Chance: Framing and Reflection - MindShift - @Kschwart @JackieGerstein

Don’t Leave Learning Up to Chance: Framing and Reflection - MindShift - @Kschwart @JackieGerstein | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
Jackie Gerstein is an experienced educator who has been working as a classroom teacher and pre-service teacher trainer for years. With a background in experiential learning, Gerstein is excited about current trends in education that have more people excited to try project-based learning, maker education and other approaches that let students get hands-on with their learning.

She hopes all the excitement turns into robust, meaningful change in how mainstream teachers educate. To do that, she says it’s crucial that teachers not only focus on the materials and tools of a maker activity, but also carefully frame it and reflect upon it to make sure learning happens.

“If we don’t create a process of reflecting and framing them, then we are leaving learning up to chance,” Gerstein said on a panel about makerspaces hosted at the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) conference.

Thinking about Theme: Anchor Chart & a Freebie

Thinking about Theme: Anchor Chart & a Freebie | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it

Theme can be a tricky topic to teach and one that I try to touch on all year long with the different Teacher Time books and read aloud books we cover. My experience has been that when we discuss it all year long, students are able to deepen their understanding gradually, as opposed to an isolated lesson here or there. Plus, the added benefit of seeing them connect books through theme at this point of the year reminds me why it's often worth it to go slow on these more "out there" topics.

Coding – AMDSB EdTech Learning Community

Coding – AMDSB EdTech Learning Community | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
Code is the language that a computer understands. Coding, in the simplest of terms, is telling a computer to do what you want it to do. This begins with breaking a task down into logically sequenced step-by-step commands for the computer to follow. Coding allows users to investigate, problem solve, explore and communicate through discovery, and it is a way to express ideas creatively.
