Here’s a great resource: the Teaching Practices Inventory. It’s an inventory that lists and scores the extent to which research-based teaching practices are being used. It’s been developed for use in math and science courses, but researchers Carl Wieman and Sarah Gilbert suggest it can be used in engineering and social sciences courses, although they have not tested it there. I suspect it has an even wider application. Most of the items on the inventory are or could be practiced in most disciplines and programs

This inventory, published by the University of British Columbia was developed by an impressive team from Canada, headed by Nobel Prize winning physicist Carl Wieman.  Fine research. Deep and worth the dive.

We often take school schedules as being fixed without questioning why they are as they are and if they meet the needs of our students.   Looking at the needs and natural dispositions of student as the basis for planning can lead to some very interesting innovations in how, where, and when we teach and learn.

SCIENCE TEACHERS: WATCH THIS VIDEO! This is a great video that explains what students gain from watching videos dealing with science concepts. Watch this and use the information to choose great videos. Or add components to the videos you already watch to help make sure your students will learn.

Research shows that 9th grade is a pivotal year for high school students. Some define it as a "make or break year for many 14- and 15-year-olds." Why?  They are entering a new school, having more autonomy and more homework, and they are an adolescents, with brains that may not be making the best decisions.
This post discusses these issues and provides suggestions as to steps that may be considered to assist them in the process.

Knowing 9th grade year is so pivotal and important and getting 9th graders to know it are two different things. Attendance, behavior, and grades. Attendance in first 30 days.

"Several Studies published recently show similar results; students lose interest in longer lecture videos and become distracted. If lectures are short or broken up by some kind of interaction (such as quizzes), then engagement is far higher."

Many of us have students with ADHD in our classrooms, and we know that day to day the behavior changes. This post provides some background information that was certainly new to me as well as some ideas you might incorporate into lessons that may help all your students, not only those with ADHD. Talk about authentic learning, this post provides the model to help your students become engaged and motivated researchers. Train students in "statistics and research methods" and they can actively participate in research.
