Education Should Be About Preparing for Tomorrow

Education Should Be About Preparing for Tomorrow | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
We need to have higher expectations for ourselves as educators, parents, and policymakers; and we need to have higher expectations for our students -- they will meet the bar wherever it is set.

To address this challenge we must revolutionize what we teach, how we teach and how we measure the results. Fundamental and rapid change is necessary -- now, not sometime in the future. Solving our nation's education crisis will take commitment and investment in proven approaches to project-based learning.

We have to convert our thinking from maximizing content coverage and "teaching to the test" to using methods that help students understand the applications of what they learn.

===> We must help students develop problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills -- skills that will prepare them to compete in the global economy. <===

We have to educate in ways today that prepare students and teachers for the world they live now and tomorrow. We seem to lack the will and the leadership. We have talking head syndrome. The best job an educator could have is to be in the classroom, not be a principal.

Allan Shaw's curator insight, August 4, 11:20 PM

These are some of the issues we are grappling with or some of us are realising that we need to grapple with at school. In a real school situation school leaders and classroom teachers also have to acknowledge and professionally balance parental expectations and society's views on what constitutes schooling along with the state mandated demands of curriculum and outcomes, with what we, as professionals, see as what students increasingly need as their future unfolds.

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education

Howard Gardner, creator of ‘multiple intelligences’ theory, launches new project on ‘good’ education | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
Armed with a set of criteria drawn from different disciplines, I identified seven separate intelligences. All human beings possess these seven intelligences, but we differ from one another in which are strong; and in any case, strength or weakness in one (say spatial intelligence) does not predict strength or weakness in another (say, interpersonal or musical intelligence).

I would now add a few more intelligences to the list, and others, most famously Daniel Goleman, have proposed yet other intelligences like emotional intelligence. I am no longer invested in my particular set of intelligences. For me, the important advance is that a multiplicity of intelligences has been acknowledged—wits, rather than wit.

In this era of succinct messaging, I’ve created a twitter-short formula: Multiple Wits and Good Grits Lead to a Success Beyond Selfies.

Student autonomy happens with teacher autonomy. Gert Biesta proposes democracy happens in classrooms where it is lived and modeled. It is not a distant process. The word is not autonomy but emancipation which is responsible for the Other and the world we live in.

Stevi Quate's curator insight, July 2, 2014 9:28 AM

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it
One of the most effective ways to provoke student thought is through the building of “rich” questions. By asking meaningful questions - and interacting with textual information – students can come to an understanding that builds upon on their own personal experiences and opinions. Through the use of a template, questions can be created in any way that you want and provide you with a specific platform to begin your questioning focus.

Teacher knowledge for 21st century learning

Teacher knowledge for 21st century learning | Cool School Ideas | Scoop.it

This article offers a critical review of the literature on 21st century knowledge frameworks, with a particular focus on what this means for teachers and teacher educators.

The authors accomplish this by identifying common themes and knowledge domains in 15 reports, books, and articles that describe the kinds of knowledge that researchers state are integral and important for success in the 21st century.

The authors argue that seemingly disparate frameworks converge on three types of knowledge, as necessary for the 21st century: foundational, meta, and humanistic. Although 21st century frameworks are thought to advocate new types of knowledge, little has actually changed in the new century with respect to the overall goals of education.

Despite this sense of continuity, significant changes related to how technologies change all three types of knowledge need to be conveyed.

The article ends with specific conclusions and recommendations for teacher education.
