Daniel’s comprehensive review of MOOC developments

Daniel’s comprehensive review of MOOC developments | Cool Media | Scoop.it

This is the most thorough, comprehensive and balanced overview and analysis of MOOCs that I have read. This is not surprising since Sir John Daniel has had a long and distinguished career in open and distance learning, including being President of the Commonwealth of Learning and Vice-Chancellor of the UK Open University. He is currently a visiting research fellow at the Korean National Open University and an Education Master at DeTao Masters Academy, China. He thus knows of what he speaks.

How the Internet has Changed in the Last 10 Years [Infographic]

How the Internet has Changed in the Last 10 Years [Infographic] | Cool Media | Scoop.it
This infographic visualizes the spectacular rise of the Internet in the last 10 years and how some companies have failed to adapt to the changes.

Here’s an interesting infographic that has been making the rounds across social media for the last two weeks. It visualizes the spectacular rise of the Internet in just 10 years. In 2002, the Internet boasted 569 million users, which translated to 9.1% of the world’s population. In 2012, that number has gone through the roof: There are now 2.27 billion users, or 33% of the world’s population.

Another formidable stat is the amount of time people spend online — in 2002, it was only 46 minutes a day (about the time it took to download four songs); in 2012, it’s four hours a day.

Map as Art

Map as Art | Cool Media | Scoop.it

There are many amazing examples of artists who turn to cartography and geography for inspiration. Whether through the lens of a camera, paint, or sculpture, these artists have turned to creative ways to express themselves through maps.

This series of cartographically-inspired art works changes how we look at maps.  Some of these artists also make us think of places that are on the Earth as explicitly "mappable" features.  I think the Google Maps push-pin in the city center is my favorite.  Which do you prefer?

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking | Cool Media | Scoop.it

I am interested in this post and post on critical thinking. Is critical thinking a skill?  Can one teach critical thinking? Stephen has delivered the course on Critical Literacies MOOC in the past....

Robert H. Ennis, Author of The Cornell Critical Thinking Tests
“Critical thinking is reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe and do.”

Assuming that critical thinking is reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do, a critical thinker:

1. Is open-minded and mindful of alternatives
2. Tries to be well-informed
3. Judges well the credibility of sources
4. Identifies conclusions, reasons, and assumptions
5. Judges well the quality of an argument, including the acceptability of its reasons, assumptions, and evidence
6. Can well develop and defend a reasonable position
7. Asks appropriate clarifying questions
8. Formulates plausible hypotheses; plans experiments well
9. Defines terms in a way appropriate for the context
10. Draws conclusions when warranted, but with caution
11. Integrates all items in this list when deciding what to believe or do

What are the principles of critical thinking?

- Knowledge is acquired only through thinking, reasoning, and questioning. Knowledge is based on facts.

- It is only from learning how to think that you learn what to think.

- Critical thinking is an organized and systematic process used to judge the effectiveness of an argument.

- Critical thinking is a search for meaning.

- Critical thinking is a skill that can be learned.

- Do the above principles hold true and won’t change from one domain to the next?

Read more, very interesting:

David Luigi FUSCHI's comment, April 9, 2013 3:21 AM
Are we sure that Critical Thinking is really appreciated as it should? In my personal experience critical thinker are often opposed if not hunted. Deciding to be a critical thinker may have a high price especially in certain context like industry or management. Definitely it brings better results and can easily foster innovation, but it is hated by man of power and yes-men. I pride myself of constantly trying to be a critical thinker and most of all to be critical of myself and my actions, but I have to say that this has taken me quite a toll in my life, yet I do not regret it. Sorry for stepping in, I do hope this two-penny thought could help in sparkle some discussion on how to foster critical thinking.
Ajo Monzó's comment, April 9, 2013 3:32 AM
