state-of-the-art, high-precision single-chip Novelda Impulse Radar transceiver

philj's insight:

"In addition, as it is integrated on a single chip, the Novelda Impulse Radar transceiver can be seamlessly integrated into small mobile devices," adds Sankaranarayanan. "The ability to detect objects behind obstacles, coupled with increased speed and high sensitivity, not only makes it complementary and/or a substitute for existing technologies such as ultrasound, video and infrared sensors, but enables it to cater to new areas of application as well."

The Novelda Impulse Radar transceiver successfully caters to sensor applications across a range of sectors, including health monitoring (including stress and pulse monitoring), medical diagnosis (including heart beat monitoring and 3D RF-imaging), automotive and industrial (including distance and road obstacle detection), security surveillance (such as motion detection), and energy automation and defence.

"Unlike technologies that demand free visibility, Novelda NVA6000 Impulse Radar transceiver's ability to detect objects behind obstacles eliminates the need to clean lenses, thus ensuring cost savings for customers,"

Overview | Flora Brake Light Backpack | Adafruit Learning System

philj's insight:

My friend asked if I could help make him more visible on his motorcycle, so Tyler Cooper and I designed a brake light backpack that uses a Flora accelerometer to auto-detect braking behavior on a motorcycle or scooter. It also has turn signals triggered by a simple wireless module, and can still leaves plenty of room for your stuff in the pack!

The National Weather Service's MoPED – Mobile Platforms for Environmental Data – is part of a program exploring the use of vehicle fleets as a roving platform for remotely sensing weather data.
philj's insight:

It's also possible"Thanks to smaller sensors and better transmission capabilities, it’s possible to mount packages that could measure many different variables, including weather conditions, radiation levels, pollution, electrical field fluctuations, pollen, natural gas leaks and cell phone signal coverage. DreamThrower: An audio/visual display for influencing dreams

DreamThrower: An audio/visual display for influencing dreams | Cool embedded projects | Scoop.it
philj's insight:

The DreamThrower is a novel technology that explores virtually creating, throwing and catching dreams. It detects users’ dream state by measuring rapid eye movement. Once the dream state is detected, sound and light stimuli is played to alter the dream. Users report on their dream, and they can send the stimuli that they have used to another person via an on-line website. A working prototype accurately detects REM sleep. Based on results from the first experiment with three subjects, light and environmental sounds such as a jungle and ocean were found to have little influence on dreams. The second experiment with five subjects found that voice sound stimulus could influence dreams in one case.

BodyCom™ Technology - Embedded Security | Microchip Technology Inc.

BodyCom™ Technology - Embedded Security | Microchip Technology Inc. </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> | Cool embedded projects | Scoop.it
philj's insight:

Microchip’s BodyCom™ Technology is a short-range, low-data-rate communication solution for securely connecting to a wide range of wireless applications. Activated by capacitively coupling to the human body, the system communicates bidirectionally between a centralized controller and one or more wireless mobile units. Intra-body communication occurs utilizing the human body as the transmission medium.

Compared to other existing wireless technologies BodyCom offers lower active and standby energy usage, increases security through bidirectional authentication , provides a secure communication channel using the human body and allows for simpler circuit-level designs.

The product would consist of a gateway device that plugs into a wall outlet and an ethernet cable, creating the network, which can be accessed and controlled on the Web. The battery-powered sensors are placed around the home, using nearby electrical wiring to as receiving antenna.

“That’s why it doesn’t take very much power to run the communication link, because it’s not transmitting a signal very far,” Jaech explains, adding that the sensors can run “for decades” without a battery change

Orpyx is using body sensor networks to help diabetics prevent foot ulcers

Orpyx is using body sensor networks to help diabetics prevent foot ulcers | Cool embedded projects | Scoop.it
Orpyx is using body sensor networks to help diabetic patients manage foot ulcers and prevent damage which is likely to result in amputation.
philj's insight:

The second, SurroGait Rx, consists of a pressure-sensing insole which tells the user when damage is being done to the feet and provides a substitute sensor for “numb” feet. The device includes a back display, which takes data generated by the foot sensor wirelessly and it transposes the sensation so it can be felt in the back because users typically cannot feel anything through their feet due to numbness.

Arduino Blog » Blog Archive » Showcase your project: ultimate cat litter box | Cool embedded projects | Scoop.it
philj's insight:

This project by Greg is about building a smart litter box for his cats:

We have three cats and the litter is difficult to control. So I had been thinking through a project to build an enclosure. Once I stumbled on Arduino the doors of opportunity were opened. I ordered the electronics and got started on my project right away. So far the Arduino is activating exhaust fans, lightng, and a Lysol spray dispenser. It tracks the number of times the fans are activated and uses a piezo buzzer to alert a filter cleaning. I plan to use it to trigger cleaning based on usage and track each cats potties so we can control their stink before its too late.

Journal of Cheminformatics | Full text | Ami - The Chemist's Amanuensis

philj's insight:

A frequently encountered use-case was identified of how the chemist reaches the end of an experiment, but finds an unexpected result. The ability to replay events can significantly help make sense of how things progressed. The project therefore concentrated on collecting a variety of dimensions of ancillary data - data that would not normally be collected due to practicality constraints. There were three main areas of investigation: 1) Development of a monitoring tool using infrared and ultrasonic sensors; 2) Time-lapse motion video capture (for example, videoing 5 seconds in every 60); and 3) Activity-driven video monitoring of the fume cupboard environs.
