Snacks That Are Healthier Than They Seem

Snacks That Are Healthier Than They Seem | Tips for Healthy Cooking and Eating | Scoop.it
Some snacks have a bad reputation for being unhealthy, but Food Network sets the record straight on these good-for-you foods.
Wong Jo Hwee Brenda's insight:

Ever wondered which snack is healthy and which isn't? Whenever I dip my spoon into a jar of peanut butter, I wonder if it is healthy. While I have come across articles before saying that peanut butter in moderation is good for the body, I still have my doubts. I mean, something that good should contain a lot of calories right? Well, not necessarily. Like in the previous post, portion control is key and most foods like peanut butter and other snacks such as trail mixes and popcorn, should be consumed in moderation to get the best nutrients the food has to offer. Yep you got that right, popcorn is one of the healthier snacks you can indulge in, that is if you do not add extra sugars or oil to the kernels. I think much like these snacks, all foods should be consumed in moderation. After all, "too much of a good thing can be a bad thing". So remember, everything in moderation and your body will thank you for it.

How our friends change what we eat

How our friends change what we eat | Tips for Healthy Cooking and Eating | Scoop.it
Have you ever been at a restaurant table where everyone ordered a salad? A new finding may explain why this happens: When we order in groups, we like to be similar to our friends, even if it means ordering something we would not typically pick on our own
Wong Jo Hwee Brenda's insight:

How do we have healthy meals when eating out? Do you feel pressured to order the same type of food when you go out with your friends? I have the same dilemma when I am about to order my food and instead of ordering a salad or a healthier dish that I initially wanted, I usually succumb to what my friends order, which usually contains fried food or carb-loaded dishes that leave me feeling guilty after the meal. This article states that people often order foods from the same category due to our tendencies to want to fit into our groups. I think it also applies to social desirability bias, where we order similar food as our friends so that we feel accepted when we are part of the group. If I chose a salad after my friends chose a burger, I'm pretty sure they would have poked fun at me for trying to be healthy. So if you want to eat a salad when you go out, try to order first so that people will feel pressured to order the same as you and this way, you won't be singled out for wanting to eat healthy. In fact, you can even influence others to order similar healthy dishes when they see you trying to eat clean! Or you can always choose a food outlet that serves a variety of healthier dishes so that everyone can avoid being tempted by unhealthy food items.

How to Have a Better Lunch at Your Desk - Bon Appétit | Tips for Healthy Cooking and Eating | Scoop.it
With a few strategies and a bit of planning, weekday lunch can be as delicious and exciting as any meal of the week. Here’s how to rethink the way you brown-bag it.
Wong Jo Hwee Brenda's insight:

This article is really apt for Singaporeans, since they have hectic lifestyles and have little time to prepare home cooked meals that can be brought into the office. However, if planned correctly, it can actually be done. For example, instead of packing your cupboard with unhealthy snacks, pack almonds or condiments to enhance the flavors of your home cooked meals. This way, you greatly reduce the amount of unnecessary calorie intake, which greatly helps since you'd be sitting at your desk almost the entire day. It also provides tips and advice on which meals to prepare and the right container to pack your food in to reduce any hassles. This way, office workers can eat healthier while reducing the costs of eating out. The packed containers of food means that you can go anywhere during your break, a nearby park or a bench and simply people watch.

5 Healthy Foods You Can Easily Overeat

5 Healthy Foods You Can Easily Overeat | Tips for Healthy Cooking and Eating | Scoop.it
As a nutritionist, I counsel many clients who know what foods to eat to lose weight and be healthy. However, even the most educated of consumers may have trouble determining how much to eat of these foods....
Wong Jo Hwee Brenda's insight:

Now I have provided several websites to replace your meal with healthier alternatives. But, we need to take note that portion control in our diets also plays a huge part. Even if we are eating all the right foods, we could be overeating them without knowing it. For example, I love almonds and I could guzzle the whole bag if I could, but the thing about almonds and most nuts is that they contain a lot of fat. And even if those fats are supposedly good for you, overeating them could lead to bloatedness instead of providing health benefits. Cereal is one other thing that people should take note of. I used to pour a lot of cereal into my bowl (almost to the brim) and I found that it was actually too much for my stomach to handle and I realized that the size of the bowl played a factor in the amount of cereal consumed. Hence, I switched to a smaller bowl whenever I felt like eating cereal and it filled my stomach just right. Sometimes, we think that by eating plenty of health foods, we are doing the right thing for our bodies. However, overeating could actually lead to a weight gain instead of helping us maintain or even lose those extra pounds. So the next time you eat, consider your portions. Are you overeating?

I have made an effort to try stocking up on healthier snack alternatives such as granola bars or almonds and I find that I actually do not crave for the unhealthy snacks. In fact, I found that I could actually go without snacking. Sometimes, the food choices we make unconsciously adds on extra pounds and encourages other cravings that we were unaware of. Healthy food swaps for the 4th of July

Healthy food swaps for the 4th of July | Tips for Healthy Cooking and Eating | Scoop.it
Many of the foods we associate with summer can weigh us down and raise our cholesterol – and they sure don’t help the way we look in a bathing suit.
Wong Jo Hwee Brenda's insight:

Ah Summer. This means cold soft drinks, chips and backyard barbecues right? Wrong! While we want and tend to indulge during festive periods such as the 4th of July, we will probably feel guilty after. And all our efforts for getting the summer body will go down the drain. So instead of eating the usual food, we should opt for healthier alternatives, such as grilling vegetables or lean meats instead of red meat, switching our soft drinks with fruit juice and sparkling water, or using plenty of fruits in our dessert dishes. Even though switching certain food items in our meals for healthier options does not seem like much, it actually helps reduce unnecessary calories and allow us to start on healthier eating habits in the long run. And these changes in our diet can help us feel better and eventually look good all year round!
