“The New York Times reporter anticipated people on Twitter missing the nuance of her ideas, so she came prepared. ... As slides appeared on the big screen behind Amy O’Leary, @amyoleary would somehow — magically — tweet out expertly compressed summaries of her ideas, right on cue. They were live footnotes, a real-time narrative surprise.” (Published May 22, 2012.)

Traditional media outlets are often criticised for not having embraced social media in the way other organisations have around the world. There's a pretty simple explanation for this - the fundamental purpose of traditional media outlets/ brands is to sell advertising space in exchange for exposure to an audience (via content). When that isn't your main source of income, 'giving away' content is a lot easier to swallow which is why automotive, drinks and fashion brands are so fond of social. However, the smarter operators have realised that they can use social media channels and tools, especially in real-time scenarios, to keep them in their 'consideration mix' (this theory that when a consumer is considering between you and your competitors, they will lean more favourably towards you because of the value you have added elsewhere). Here are 10 examples of traditional media using social media to help encourage consideration elsewhere (and increase general engagement).

PERUGIA, Italy -- Here at the International Journalism Festival the launch of three large initiatives have generated a lot of the buzz around the topic of data journalism. The School of Data Journalism, organized by the European Journalism Centre and the Open Knowledge Foundation, is composed of three panels and five workshops and dives into some of the key issues that media organizations are currently considering: "Is it worth my while starting out trying to do data journalism?", "Will data journalism make us money?", "How do you get data that you can search, filter and analyze with a computer?" and "How do I make data stories sexy?"
