Spatial skills are important in developing fine motor skills needed to write, but these skills may also help Salt Lake City day care center students learn math, as well
Nathanael Madden's insight:

Another short article on the importance of teaching spatial reasoning. In a study of young children, when they are taught spatial reasoning, their math performance improves. More specifically, understanding of number lines and numerical representations improves. I think that this could have major implications for the near future in shaping our curriculum for our young children.

Nathanael Madden's insight:

Spatial intelligence, according to specialists at Temple University, is "plastic and everyone can get better with practice." This short article highlights a project that has tests and instruments for improving spacial intelligence and skills, including Tetris.

The Importance of Spatial Thinking Now

The Importance of Spatial Thinking Now | Content: Spatial Reasoning | Scoop.it
Right when we need it most, spatial skills are being taught the least.
Nathanael Madden's insight:

This is a fantastic look at the importance of developing a geography curriculum in our high schools and universities that focuses on spatial reasoning. For the past half-century, there has been a lack of emphasis on this subject matter and this has resulted in a lack of spatial reasoning skills in our recent generations. We need good data visualizers but there is too much focus on the data itself. "The best visualizations never celebrate the data; instead they make us learn about worldly phenomena and forget about the data. After all, who looks at the Mona Lisa to think about the paints?"

Nathanael Madden's insight:

This is a fun song about all different types of measurements that we use every day. I'm not sure about its usefulness as it is so packed full of measurements that it would be hard to use it as a learning tool. But it could be a fun introduction to measurements that shows just how much we use them in everyday life.

Estimate Measurements with a Dollar Bill (or Anything Else)

Estimate Measurements with a Dollar Bill (or Anything Else) | Content: Spatial Reasoning | Scoop.it
It doesn't happen that often, but we've all been in a situation where we need to measure something and don't have a ruler. Luckily, you probably already have a "good enough" ruler in your pocket: a dollar bill.
Nathanael Madden's insight:

Unconventional methods for measurement help solidify the fact that math is useful everywhere. This is a useful skill for people to have.

A Window into Autism and Visual Spatial Thinking: Ponder Temple Grandin

A Window into Autism and Visual Spatial Thinking: Ponder Temple Grandin | Content: Spatial Reasoning | Scoop.it
Temple Grandin was in town this past weekend. Unfortunately, I missed her session at the Humanities Festival. If any of you attended, please share your perceptions! I did get a chance to read Tribune Reporter Nina Metz’ article yesterday.
Nathanael Madden's insight:

This is an interesting look at spacial intelligence from the standpoint of specialized instruction for children with autism. I have a lot of experience with people who are on the autistic spectrum and this article rang true. We need to value the differences in the way our students see things.

Nathanael Madden's insight:

This is crazy! I've always loved the idea of using art in all subject areas but this definitely lends itself to developing spacial thinking. Looking at each piece individually and also how it all synthesizes to create something entirely different simply by changing our perspective. This is really cool!

Nathanael Madden's insight:

It turns out there's a reason why we love to use manipulatives in mathematics. Visually experiencing mathematics improves our thinking. Even playing with blocks, something commonly associated with babies and toddlers, can help develop spatial reasoning.
