CONTENT MARKETING! DO IT! It’s the NEW SEO! In fact, it’s so awesome you don’t need anything else! Just produce awesome content and you will be in SEO nirvana! It’s like double rainbows and Matt Cutts got together and had baby NyanCats! Old SEO is dead. This is the new SEO and it’s beautiful! Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is. Content marketing isn’t new. It’s just a new buzzword picked up by other industries that suddenly found out they could to “do SEO”, but they didn’t want to “do SEO”, so they tried to make it more special. It isn’t. Content marketing has been around since SEO on Google has been called SEO. To not understand this is to not understand what Google and its algorithms measure and how this might affect your site.

After I have finished writing, editing, deep linking and have published a new blog post, my work has just gotten started. Simply creating content isn’t sufficient to gain readership. You need to actively promote that new post so that people can see it and have a chance to read it. It can take a long time to build up email and RSS subscribers, so in the meantime, you will need to be more proactive. Here are all the things I do after I publish a post to get readers to it.

There are a lot of ways you can grab publicity. Online press release distribution plays an important role, of course. So do search engine optimization, social media engagement, and content marketing. The trouble is, it’s not always easy to know how your hard work will play out. Will you get the press you need or will your efforts be a huge waste of time?

For some bloggers, it’s just about the writing. For the rest of us, it is so much more than just the writing. Many of us write in order to connect with people, either as an individual or a business. For the connectors, we feel downright depressed when we write the way we’re told to write…but we’ll go for days, weeks, or months without a single comment or loving support.

I don’t know everything about content marketing – no one does. Sometimes we are tempted to think we do but when the truth comes home there is always a lot more to learn about content marketing’s role on the social web.

Brands have been telling stories to attract and retain customers for hundreds of years. The difference today is that the barriers to entry (content acceptance, talent and technology) no longer exist for brands to get into the publishing arena. This History of Content Marketing Infographic is based on the Content Marketing World Timeline Video from the Content Marketing Institute. Special thanks to CMI’s creative director Joseph Kalinowski for making this happen.

This is the eighth letter in a series on Professional Content Marketing. World class golfers like Tiger Woods see the game of golf differently than you and I… …but the hard reality is that difference has nothing to do with their athletic abilities, work ethic or God given talent. It would be much easier to accept our lack of success if this wasn’t true. It’s much easier to accept the success Tiger Woods has achieved, including fourteen major golf championships, if it were all the result of simply being chosen by some higher power.

One of the things I love about content marketing is that it’s equal parts artsy and techy. Check out this post from Marketing Daily on how to optimize your content for maximum social SEO benefit:
Did you know that 90% of all organizations use content in their marketing efforts? Although the phrase "content marketing" is something of a buzzword amongst today's promotional teams, the reality is that this inbound marketing practice is both remarkably widespread and effective. To learn more about what content marketing is, how it can benefit your organization and how to get started using this technique to promote your company, check out the following infographic from Demand Metric "A Guide to Marketing Genius: Content Marketing". This is a very forward thinking and insightful article. My favorite part is when someone was asked what their favorite ad was online in 2012 and the reply was, it wasn't an ad at al,l it was actually content. So true, what do you think, has content or snips of content become the new ad format? What do you think? Sites like RebelMouse and Pinterest although one is visual.

In today's Content Creator's Toolbox, we talk about an unusual ally in the drive to create great content: boredom. If it’s been a while, you have some catching up to do. At least if you’re going to keep feeding the insatiable beast that is your content marketing program. A few weeks ago I read an excellent post on ReadWrite called “The iPhone Killed My Creativity” by Brian S. Hall, and it really got me thinking about my own creative process.

Consumers are looking for as much information about a product/service/business/brand before making a decision as possible, especially in the B2B sector where the decisions that are made can affect a large number of people within the organization. The content that is created on behalf of a business can go a long way in establishing trust with potential clients or customers.
"My 2013 prediction warned of the continued fall in the value of online content which would lead to the production of ever more content as media companies tried to maintain ad revenues. You can think of it as a towering tsunami of content, or as a massive bubble of content inflation. Just as inflation devalues currencies, content inflation is devaluing content."
