Still Stumped by Social Media? Google Wants to Help Figure Out What's Working | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
Want to find out how your Twitter and Facebook posts are affecting your bottom line? Google's new reports might provide the answer.Get the latest blog...

The reports allow you to define a specific goal to measure -- such as visits to your site that result in purchases -- and then offer analysis on how social media is affecting those goals. For instance, the "Conversion Report" shows conversion rates of each social network and the monetary value they drive to your business, Google says. In other words, it can help measure which social media network is most valuable to your business.

Google Plans SEO Over-Optimization Penalty

Google Plans SEO Over-Optimization Penalty | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it

What Qualifies as Over-Optimization?

No one but Google knows what, exactly, is "over-optimization." However, Cutts did mention that Google is looking at sites by “people who sort of abuse it whether they throw too many keywords on the page, or whether they exchange way too many links, or whatever they're doing to sort of go beyond what a normal person would expect in a particular area.”

SEO & Google: The Ugly Truth

SEO & Google: The Ugly Truth | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
We don't need to run around after every algo update post, every webmaster notification, word from a Googler's lips, screaming to the world that something is amiss and how they're out to persecute us. Get a grip.

Certainly, Matt Cutts would just love to increase his budget and sway. But these aren't always the realities.

When folks talk about IR patents and papers, it's always best to keep that in mind. Things don't always work out in the wash.

Google penalized my site unfairly. Here is my response.

Sure I did use some SEO services over the years a few times for testing purposes, but nothing on a major scale. In fact I have nowhere near the amount of links other top ranking sites in my niche have that constantly spam for backlinks. (I will get back to that in minute )

Bing, Not Google, Favors Wikipedia More Often in Search Results [Study] | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
This study aimed to provide a more complete view of the top search rankings Wikipedia enjoys on both Google and Bing. Using a mix of queries that ranged from one to seven words, how often does Wikipedia appear on Page 1 of Google and Bing?

However, Kevin Gibbons on eConsultancy, pointed out that Wikipedia’s dominance on Google isn’t a complete mystery. Among the reasons for Wikipedia’s top rankings in Google:

Unique, in depth content.

Pages are written around a primary search term.

Strong domain authority.

Great internal link structure.

Excellent page authority.

In order to organise all this knowledge, Google has acquired a product called Freebase, a database of more than 20 million topics or”entities”. As an example, the entity of “John F Kennedy” includes biographical information, pictures of him, famous sayings, and much much more.

Bizible, a start-up that makes local marketing software for SMBs, approached me recently* to preview the results of a Google Places Ranking Factors study they had conducted and I was intrigued enough by their findings to share some of them here.

So what did them fancy PhD-types discover? Some interesting stuff.

The Bizible data shows a big difference in ranking factors between improving ranking when the local result were integrated in the main SERP page and when it did not make it in the 7 pack/5 pack/universal results.

Predicting SEO Changes in Rankings, Algorithms, and Penalties

Predicting SEO Changes in Rankings, Algorithms, and Penalties | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
Some thoughts on Google's recent announcements regarding entity search and over-optimization penalities.

One place where this has been increasingly visible is in Google’s ongoing redefinition of “relevance” and what it means to present relevant results to searchers.

At one point, matching keywords in a query to pages on the Web that contained those keywords was what search engines specialized in. Google brought some advances to what earlier search engines such as AltaVista and Excite and Lycos were showing us by using link analysis methods like PageRank to try to show us the most important (or at least most popular) of those pages at the tops of results.

We always assume that Google knows best, but is that necessarily true? According to Peter finding a formula that works 100% of the time is no easy task. He opened up with a great example “If you have a 301 redirect and you tell Google to go left, they’ll probably go right.” You could end up implementing a 301 redirect and when you request the location a cached version of the site may still appear instead of the redirect you intended.

New Google Analytics Social Reports: Measure SMM Value, View Streams

New Google Analytics Social Reports: Measure SMM Value, View Streams | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
Google’s new suite of Social reports within their Analytics platform launches tomorrow. Among the new features, users can compare last-click to assisted conversions, see Social Visitors Flow, view select social streams in Analytics, and more.

Interesting " It’s difficult to assign value to social channels and campaigns, as evidenced by the sheer amount of tools trying to solve the social ROI challenge. Social isn't easily linked to outcomes, Mui pointed out; upper funnel impact is hard to capture and understand. Social data silos also make it difficult to aggregate and compare activity across channels."

Unnaturally Natural Link Building Philosophy

Unnaturally Natural Link Building Philosophy | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it

Ok, maybe Google doesn’t find your site loathsome. But, Google definitely finds your site unnatural. Specifically, they find your link profile unnatural.

What is Link Velocity and What to Watch For

Link velocity is the rate at which links are acquired by a website. Link velocity is constantly fluctuating; there will be periods of higher link acquisition and periods where link acquisition will be lower. For example, your site publishes a controversial post/article, and the links come flooding in for a week. After which your link velocity will return to a more normalized rate.

What Google might be keying in on is aberrant link velocity rates. That is, link velocity rates that are much higher than the normalized link velocity rate of the site.

How to Rank on the First Page of Google Through Videos | Content Strategy |Brand Development |Organic SEO | Scoop.it
Don’t you ever wish there was a way to land on the first page of search results that didn’t involve the back-breaking work of traditional SEO?
