Sustainable hotels earn higher guest ratings, says Cornell study

Hotels that have earned the ISO 14001 certification had higher guest satisfaction scores than those with no such certification, according to a study published by the Cornell Center for Hospitality Research (CHR).

The study, which surveyed guests at 6,850 hotels in Spain, found that 4-star hotels particularly benefited from higher guest satisfaction scores when they held the ISO environmental management certification.

Emerald | Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology | "Like" and "Check-in:" How hotels utilize Facebook as an effective marketing tool

Emerald | Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology | "Like" and "Check-in:" How hotels utilize Facebook as an effective marketing tool | Content Marketing & E-Commerce for Hotels | Scoop.it

Purpose - This study aims to examine how effectively hotels are using Facebook as a marketing tool and how consumers are interacting with the property by measuring the number of fans, customer comments, and accuracy of information provided.

Design/methodology/approach - This paper is based upon a content analysis, inquiring into 100 hotels’ Facebook pages.

Findings - Findings demonstrate the use of Facebook features by hotels varied widely. Some hotels utilize Facebook solely as a means for posting property information, whereas others focus on facilitating customer engagement.

Research limitations/implications - Literature related to the effectiveness of social media as a marketing tool within the hospitality industry is severely limited, thus this research highlights the challenges some hotels are experiencing with maximizing the reach of their Facebook pages, suggests possible approaches for improvement and makes recommendations for structuring social networking strategies.

Practical implications - Results demonstrated many hotels failed to interact with customers, provide accurate and timely information, and entice prospective purchasers by showcasing the property through photos and videos. Practitioners would be well served to improve upon these aspects to better appeal to consumers and recognize a significant return on investment.

Originality/value - This study investigates the extent to which Facebook is being utilized by the top 100 domestic U.S. hotels. Evaluation criteria included three aspects: content information, property details, and interactions between hotels and customers. Literature related to social network marketing is sparse, thus the present research is intended to provide a basis for future research and guidance for industry professionals to best maximize technological marketing channels.

Four tips for using data-driven marketing on the path to conversion - Econsultancy

Four tips for using data-driven marketing on the path to conversion - Econsultancy | Content Marketing & E-Commerce for Hotels | Scoop.it
Do you make your decisions based on data or are you among the 89% of marketers that make their customer related decisions based on factors other than analytics?

Tips summarized...

Gather the right data

The challenge of big data is how to reduce it down to the level at which it is applied to the individual customer. You need to know your audience’s values, identities, and needs, and how your brand fits (or does not fit) into these.

Think omni-channel and use contextualization to your advantage

Once you have identified your customers’ values and needs, ensure that you are supporting engagement and greater customer experiences across channels.

This means that not only should your site look good on multiple screens, you also need to deliver personalised messages in each channel, based on the context. Your Facebook page may have a different tonality to your onsite language, for instance, but let the content adapt to the medium, not vice versa. Duplication of effort should not have to take place.

Aim for real–time and seize the conversion opportunity

How fast can you react to analytics data? If it takes you more than a day to launch a new campaign and contextualise it based on browser behaviour, you’ve missed the boat.

Once you have the customer there, you will need to ensure that they can convert. This can become challenging unless you have a site that is optimised for this, able to detect where the user has come from and contextualise the landing page then and there.

Smart content for improved speed

Ecommerce sites have been working with smart content for a long time, and it is time that we embrace that in order to improve speed and agility for other sites as well.

eCommerce su Pinterest: Come Vendere Una Camera di Hotel Aggiungendo il Prezzo

eCommerce su Pinterest: Come Vendere Una Camera di Hotel Aggiungendo il Prezzo | Content Marketing & E-Commerce for Hotels | Scoop.it

http://pinterest.com/pin/66287425735417800/

http://pinterest.com/pin/66287425735417800/

The four essential hotel parities - rates, content, rooms and market

Hotel marketers know that maintaining rate parity is one of the biggest challenges in the online distribution of hotel inventory, but what we often overlook are the other parities that can influence your chances of increasing direct bookings. This article looks at four essential parities: Rate, content, room and market. You have to sympathise with revenue managers (or those who set your rate strategy) – the list of rate parity woes is ever-growing; corporate rates are being offered to consumers, VAT isn’t being included on pricing, inclusions (breakfast etc) not being made clear, non-transparent pricing (per person vs. per room), lack of clarity of rate types on offer, mixed messaging on cancellation policies etc.

5 Search Engine Optimization Trends For 2014 (Infographic) | Content Marketing & E-Commerce for Hotels | Scoop.it

A previous report from Forrester Research established Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as the most important source of targeted traffic business owners can have for their websites, with organic web search or natural search sitting at the top of traffic sources. Digital marketers expect this trend to persist and would grow at a steady rate despite the proliferation and growing popularity of other traffic sources like social networks and other online or offline channels.

The following infographic describes some of the most anticipated SEO trends for the new year.
