Google says It will rank sites with copyright infringement notices lower

Google says It will rank sites with copyright infringement notices lower | Content Marketing & Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Google has announced a new update to its search algorithm:

"We aim to provide a great experience for our users and have developed over 200 signals to ensure our search algorithms deliver the best possible results. Starting next week, we will begin taking into account a new signal in our rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices we receive for any given site. Sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in our results. This ranking change should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily"

Therese's comment: I wonder how this will affect social curation platforms whose users do not always respect copyright and which consequently might be the object of repeated copyright infringement complaints to Google.

Curators Create The Metadata Needed To Enable Our Emerging Collective Intelligence

Curators Create The Metadata Needed To Enable Our Emerging Collective Intelligence | Content Marketing & Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it
Robin Good (shortened): Participatory culture writer and book author Henry Jenkins interviews cyberculture pioneer Howard Rheingold (Net Smart, 2012) by asking him to explain some of the concepts that have helped him become a paladin of the  and "new literacies" so essential for survival in the always-on information-world we live in today.

[...] Howard Rheingold: "...at the fundamental level, curation depends on individuals making mindful and informed decisions in a publicly detectable way. [...] But the kind of curation that is already mining the mountains of Internet ore for useful and trustworthy nuggets of knowledge, and the kind that will come in the future, has a strong literacy element."

[...] In other words, "curators" are the ones creating the metadata needed to empower our emerging collective intelligence...Curation Is The Social Choice About What Is Worth Paying Attention To.

Shaz J's comment, September 3, 2012 3:20 AM
You're welcome :)

It's interesting interesting that you mention POV and stance, as that is not something I had explicitly articulated for myself, but naturally it must be implicitly true. In that sense, it reminds me (again) that curation forces self-reflection in order to present the content better, and that can only be a good thing.
Liz Renshaw's comment, September 8, 2012 9:57 PM
Agree with posts about curation guiding self reflection. This interview in particular is top value and two of my fav people indeed.
Andrew McRobert's curator insight, August 19, 2014 8:43 AM

8. This links a series of three interviews quite lengthy but there is some insightful information for the novice in the digital information age. There is video links within the article, including a great question and answer with Robin Good on curation. The video brings a balance to this inclusion.

Curation: Manage Your Attention Not Just Your Time

Curation: Manage Your Attention Not Just Your Time | Content Marketing & Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

This guest post is by Beth Kanter for Socialbrite and this is great for curators just starting out or a refresher for those of you who have been doing this for a while.

She tells you why curation is an important tool in your content strategy and gives you some good suggestions on how to do it effectively which I'm going to focus on here. Curation requires time and energy, and Beth's process really works because I'm doing this myself. [says Jan Gordon]

Therese's comment: couldn't agree more with Beth Kanter, Jan Gordon and Robin Good: content curation requires even more focus than creation because of the risk to drown in information.

Apple Wants To Buy Pinterest Rival, The Fancy - BUsiness Insider

Apple Wants To Buy Pinterest Rival, The Fancy - BUsiness Insider | Content Marketing & Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Discovered this Aug 4 2012 post through L2's Newsletter : Apple wants to buy Pinteres Rival, The Fancy [..] The objective: to secure a role for Apple in the growing e-commerce market, putting the 400 million-plus users with credit cards on file with Apple's iTunes Store to work shopping—with Apple getting a cut of the action.

While The Fancy is far smaller than archrival Pinterest, which similarly lets users make lists of things they find interesting, the 20-person New York startup, led by cofounder and CEO Joe Einhorn, is much farther along in linking its users to transactions. The Fancy takes a 10 percent cut of purchases. Last we checked in, sales were exploding.

There is no signed deal and no guarantee one will happen...

Therese's commet: I have a weakness fo The Fancy because it's built from the start for social shopping, as opposed to Pinterest which tries to turn social content curation into revenue-driving social shopping curation. However, I'm not sure that The Fancy has cracked the code on social shopping. I found its recent move to reward users for curatng products quite unconvincing: not a good sign if they can't create an organic social dynamics. Given the high visibility of The Fancy's current backers (Dorsey et al.), it will reach an insane valuation, no matter what, though!

Google Gives Big Content an Olive Branch in Search Algorithm Change - Wired.com | Content Marketing & Content Curation Tools For Brands | Scoop.it

Therese's comment: Google is altering its search algorithm to lower search rankings of sites that are subject to copyright infringement notices. This article claims that Google is not following users'interest anymore, but rather its business interest by trying to appease big contentplayers such as US TV networks which have refused to air on Google TV.
